Interesting, depends a lot on whats going to be there weather I will go or not as I will only be back from a week spotting around London on the Saturday. I doubt if there will be very much, but fair dues to them for giving us something to go visit here in the west.

CLIFDEN!! thats crazy.....its remote, small(it will park about 5 planes.....guesstimate from being at the airport) and the runway is 609m. I would hope that there is....but 19 miles west you have eicm which is more suitable. where did you hear this steyr? It would be class...I'll be at da gaeltacht then!:)

Oooops! mistake there, Darragh-k, 19 miles west of Clifden leaves you in very deep water! EICM is about 46 miles ESE of Clifden.

46.74 miles and not west.:) As an after thought, I think you maybe thinking of Connermara airport at Inverin, which is about 20 miles from EICM.

A couple of weeks ago a Connemara TD or Councillor praised Clifden airshow for not including military aircraft in their show and made a point of saying, unlike Salthill. In today's Galway advertiser they have listed 6 of the participants, and guess what, 3, yes half of them, are military! just goes to prove that if it was'nt for the military 90% of all air shows wouldn't exist. Clifden will never rival any of the Salthill shows, but any aviation events in Ireland should welcomed. Fair due to the organisers.

Ya, I think I'll head out for a look to see the airport anyways.
It will be the "90th anniversary of the historic Alcock and Brown flight".
The airshow will be on between 3 and 5 I believe in AilleBrack, Ballyconneely, near Connemara golf club... I doubt you'll find that on your VFR charts! :) the Pc9's , AW139 and CASA will be taking part aswell as the Aerarann ATR 500. There will also be displays by Dave Bruton and Jimmy Griffin.

And for those of you not interested in all that.... there'll be Bouncy castles and face painting too! :D

The tool. Airshow's are fairly pointless without millitary aircraft. People don't go to Fairford in the hope of seeing a 737!

Eh ... I think thats a different airport. Clifden has been in construction for a long time now. It must be complete if the airshow is there tomorrow. I know eamon o cuiv signed a contract for an airfield but thats separate altogether. I'm posting of the
Mobile so i can't dig up any links for ye but check out the
County council planning website and the map there
Should say when work was started in clifden etc.
You better have a talk with that source! :) so who is heading out tomorrow then? Steyr? Vulcan?
I could be wrong about the above but i have a hunch!

ok, found out it IS under construction already and apparently should be completed by late summer. Its costing close to 5million to build and will be top class i'm told!

I made an approach to and overflew the strip about two weeks ago. It was at a very early stage of the ground works. There is a service road built and you can see the area of the bog that has been marked out as the strip. There were huge trenches along side the strip, presumably for drainage. I'm no builder but I'd be amazed if it was finished by late summer. Inisboffin on the other hand is coming along very nicely, the bedrock for the entire strip is down and rolled, I doubt it'll be very long before it's finished.

Anyone know who is going to operate the service to Inishbofin? Aer Arann Islands?

Yes, the subtext here is 'Do they need pilots'?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,675 ✭✭✭ronnie3585

I'm pretty sure Aer Arann have the contract to service both Clifden and boffin, don't know if they are looking for pilots - for the Islander you need at least 1500hrs as the vast majority of the flying in them is without a co-pilot.

Pictures people!!!!! I think todays show took place at the Alcock and Brown memorial site!

Hmm, A lot that is probably twin time too. Copilots? who needs em!
When I hit the 1500 hour mark I hope to be flying for their big brother airline or even Swineair.:D

Steyr, with all the aircraft transitting EICM. The best place for pictures was probably there.

Actually the only two i saw, were the yak and iac271, i was hoping to see the pc9's go by but unfortunately not.

I was told the PC9M's only did a single 4 ship fly by and that was all and that an AW139 cancelled and an EC135 had to fill the slot so all in all you missed nothing and there was a poor turnout.

The 2nd Clifden Air Show is tomorrow, Saturday the 13th. This time it will actually be held in Clifden and not Ballyconneely like last year.

The Clifden Air Show was organised by the Clifden Chamber of Commerce, mainly to commemorate the Alcock and Brown crossing/crash landing in Connemara. I don't think it has much to do with the airport.

Like last year, they will also have an "Army Ground Display", which last year included some tanks, machine guns, mortars and rocket launchers!
