    Hi,

Thinking of picking up a PS3.

Thing is my TV only has one HDMI port and I currently have Sky HD conected to that so was wondering can the PS3 run HD over component like the 360?
    Anyone doing this?

    Cheers.

Cheers. And there's no difference in quality compared to HDMI?

You can't play DVD's through component on the PS3.

Basically anything with copyright protection ,won't play through component.

I have to use component cables to play my ps3 on one of my tvs(its HD-compatible but it does'nt have hdmi). The ones i use are the official sony ones and all.I CAN play dvds(at a max of 576p) and there seems to be no restriction on playing blu-ray movies.I can play them at 1080i(which is the max my tv does).HDCP does not apply to component bcos its an analogue connectiion. The only restriction is the upscaling of dvds, maximum res of 576p.I would also say that the quality difference is not that great between hdmi either. The official sony cables are of very high quality.

True , but with exceptions , its up to the publisher of the title whether or not HDCP is implemented, and it will most likely only be implemented in HD titles on a case by case basis if any publisher decides to do so , if the publisher decides to limit output to HDCP handshake only then this may well prohibit output on anything other than a digital HDCP connection , but this will be entirely at the content publishers discretion.
They could for instance , limit output to 480p only without a HDCP handshake , regardless of connection type , or block it altogether on non HDCP enabled devices.

Having said that , and for all the hype about HDCP , I have never come across a title yet with HDCP protection , ever ! It would seem that no one wants to be the first to release a title that wont play on something for fear of the inevitable backlash!

The same hype littered the media on Vistas release , and for all the guff spoken about it , not one single instance of HDCP blocking , downscaling or anything else has ever come anywhere near my PC or TV or for that matter anyone I know or have read about.

Anyone any experience in using one of those HDMI 1 to 3 switcher boxes?
You can pick them up for about €20 on E-bay.

Yeah you can. Contrary to popular opinion, Blurays also work at 1080i on mine...
HDMI does look a little bit nicer, but component is spot on really...

tman is correct. You can play games at 1080p thru component but only 1080i for dvd, blu-ray thru component. 1080p is only reserved for HDMI playback.

    I made a mistake in what I posted earlier,sorry:(.
The ps3 does play dvd's through component, but they aren't upscaled and the quality is crap.

I tried it a couple of months ago and I wasn't overly impressed by the quality at all ,upscaling definetly makes a difference and component makes it akward using the ps3 for dvd playback.

Thats a very good point , SkyHd only does stereo over hdmi , and given that good quality component cables supply an excellent picture , if I had to choose then it would be sky on the component and the PS3 over HDMI.

The PS3 does all kinds of lovely surround audio stuff over HDMI , so it would have to have preference if my amp only had 1 HDMI input.

Actually I didn't even read your post. The OP asked about the difference between HDMI and component on the PS3. I think this videoclip says a lot. Maybe you should learn to read before shooting your mouth off.

Actually I find boards of great use thanks and no my posts are not just it. I was responding to the OPs query. I would regard any post to be directed to the OPs original question. If I had been responding to anybody elses comment I would have quoted or made some direct reference.

With regards to the PS3 I would think that people buy them mainly for one of two reasons (most likely both)

    1) As a games machine
    2) As a blu-ray player

I have yet to here of anybody buying one to watch upscaled DVDs.

Back to the original point though I use my PS3 through both component and HDMI and don't notice any appreciable difference. There was a good article regarding the technical differences between the two which seems to have gone but I have attached the text files which I had copied.

Some quotes from that piece of text ......

HDMI has also been panned because it's much easier for the signal to degrade over time. Long-range HDMI cables are also known to lose quality because of a less-than-perfect set of standards for the format. Analog cables, on the other hand, can last decades and stretch for dozens of feet without any sort of automatic degradation.
Component cables typically take a digital signal, convert it to analog for internal conversion processes, and then convert it back to digital for output to the TV.

And Im not surprised you couldnt find it again , Im sure it was pulled as soon as someone who knew what they were talking about read it , this has got to be the most embarrassingly bad piece of tech writing Ive ever seen , Almost everything in it is technically incorrect , the guy was clearly making it up as he went along.
