Could be a number of things, what speed where you going at when it happened, were you accelerating? Is the light still on or has it gone out? Usual cause of engine light on the MK4 is the Oxygen Sensor.

    Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor,
    Lambda sensor,
Throttle Body, (I would be thinking this is possibly your problem)

All known faults with the MkIV Golf and other VWs.

not being smart but thats why when God invented cars, he also invented mechanics - go see one. From your description, there could be anything from trivial to life threatening wrong with your car. If you don't know, ask someone who does.

A failed coil pack on one cylinder might lead to this rough running

What he said, although might not necessarily be a coil pack - sounds like a mis-fire but all will be revealed when the right diagnostic equipment is used!

Try not to drive it too much til you get it seen to - potential to do damage to the catalytic converter, if raw fuel is being dumped out the exhaust.
