    Hi,

A friend gave me her ipod to see if i can fix it for her! Basically she dropped it while it was still playing and it stopped working she couldnt get it to switch on or anything. When i connect it to my mac the computer doesnt recognise it & so I can't restore it. When you try to switch it on the apple logo comes up but it never kicks into life... it makes lots of noise as if its trying to start up but never actually does.

I can kick into diagnostic mode & according to the auto test on that everything is fine!

    Anyone any idea's?

What kind of iPod is it. I'm going to guess a hard drive based one due to the noise.

I'm guessing its a clicking noise or whirring noise which normally indicates that it is constantly trying to and failing to read the hard disk. This is not uncommon to when hard drives are dropped, either the reader or the disk themselves can become loose or stuck.

How old is it, any chance it can be returned to apple?

EDIT: You answered my question. I'm guessin it cant read the hard drive. Not too sure what can be done to fix this yourself. I heard banging them a bit might get it going again but I would not recommend that.

Nope checked on their online warranty site & its not covered anymore! & repairs costs are crazy!!!!

& yep your spot on regarding the noise!

By hardware problem do this mean it cant be fixed with restore? As in it physically needs to be fixed....

It certainly does not sound like a software issue. The harddrive is unreadable and the fact it is even being recognisied on your computer is going to make it very hard to get to the restore side.

I presume you have tried the reset and stuff like that, but I doubt they did anything.

Does any logo show on the screen, normally an apple sad face would appear?

Try connecting it to your computer and doing a reset.

Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

    Nope no logo appearing!

I got it into disk mode with tick and ok to disconnect showing. When i connect to my computer a message pops up in itunes saying "itunes has detected an ipod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to resotre this ipod before it can be used with itunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the ipod." When i restore it, the software is extracted and a progress bar appears and completes but it never enters stage two of the restore process where the ipod itself shows the apple symbol and progress bar...

I read somewhere to disconnect & plug into socket in the wall. The progress bar appears on the ipod itself and completes but then it goes back to square one - apple logo appearing & its trying to turn on but never kicks into life... &making noises again!

I know sometimes the need to be connected to an external power source or power adaptor to reach that phase. Although normally you are informed about this either in iTunes or on the iPod.

What kind of computer are you using laptop or PC? Are the USB ports powered, i.e would an ipod normal charge when they are plugged in to them?

    Updated version of Itunes?

Using a mac laptop and yep usb ports are fine! If i stick my own ipod in it pops up in itunes no problem! & its the same type of ipod - 5th Gen 80gb video ipod....

I'm using itunes v7 and also read somewhere that sometimes if you can connect to older version of itunes (e.g. v6) and restore it with that first then reconnect to v7 to sync music etc. Do you think this may work? Or do you think it needs to brought in somewhere and physically fixed?

The fact thats it showing up on the mac and trying to update means I would keep trying for a while before bringing it somewhere. Is the laptop connected to a power source?
