Accessing money abroad

Travelling to U.S. next month and just rang Bank of Ireland to let them know I'd be using the credit card abroad and to find out fees for using credit card and cirrus card abroad.

    Credit card
    - fee of 1.75% on purchases for cross border handling fee
    - ATM withdrawal: if card in credit 1.75%, if card not in credit 1.75% + cash advance fee also (didn't get this figure, doh!)

    Cirrus card
    - ATM withdrawal: 3.5% of transaction (min 3.17, max 11.43)

    Conclusion:
Topped up credit card seems like the way to go

Is there any other cheaper way? Maybe using cash could be but the security issues would not be worth it. Traveller's cheques? Not worth the hassle?

I think I already know the best approach but I just said I'd throw it out there anyway in case I'm missing something!
