Limits of liability, lost/delayed luggage, Aer Lingus

    I was travelling with Aer Lingus last Saturday, and two checked-in pieces of luggage was "forgotten" upon departure. It is now three days later, and Aer Lingus has promised that the bags would be on the next flight. Aer Lingus operates a daily flight to that destination.

    In terms of limits of liability, I found the following in the confirmation email:

    In the case of destruction, loss of, or damage or delay to baggage, 1,000 Special Drawing Rights (approximately EUR 1,230) and, if the value of your baggage is greater than this limit, you should inform the carrier at check-in or ensure that it is fully insured prior to travel;

    I guess the value of the content in the bags were about 200-300 euros so I am not looking for 1k euros, but just out of curiosity, how easy is it to be compensated for the full value of lost bags with Aer Lingus, speaking out of other boardsers' experiences?

    We hold travel insurance with Mondial/Elvia, would it be easier to get a compensation from them, or do Aer Lingus have to pay these Special Drawing Rights even to passengers without travel insurance?

    Any help would be highly appreciated!

    I'm not sure if this extract from the Aer Lingus site is any use to you, but if you are still away it might help:

    "Any compensation due to customers with baggage related claims will adhere to our Terms and Conditions of Carriage.

    We allow €60.00/ $75 USD per twenty-four-hour period to non-residents on the presentation of relevant receipts towards the cost of essential interim purchases. This is up to a maximum of 3 days and €180.00/$225.

    Customers on their final flight will not be reimbursed for interim purchases."

    [Their dollar/euro exchange rate is out of date!]

    Aer Lingus have twice left my bags with Heathrow while I was connecting with a flight to San Francisco.

    The first time, Virgin, told me to bring the reciepts back to the airport and they would give me upto $50 for essential items and have the bags sent on the next flight, which was the next day

    The second time, BA, gave me a prepaid Visa card with $50 on it and they delivered my bags to my hotel in Vegas the following night, this worked out very well as I was only staying in SF for 1 night before going to Vegas
