OK here is a tough one.

Does anyone know how to get, or has anyone managed to get, a Nikon Coolscan III working with XP while using a SCSI to USB adaptor ?

I bough a second hand CoolScan II and a SCSI to USB adaptor, however when I plug everything in I get a USB device cannot be recognized error from XP.

I downloaded the Nikon 3.1.2 software and the ASPI layer from Adaptec and the drivers for the SCSI USB adaptor I bough. I also dowbloade a version of Vuescan

I asked Nikon and they send me the reply below, but on the interweb there are some people who say they have worked the CoolScan III with a SCSI USB adaptor and other who have not.

Anyone here got first hand knowledge ?.

Or has anyone got a Cool Scan III and SCSI USB adaptor working with LINUX ?

    Hello

Thank you for contacting Nikon Technical Support. We do not recommend using a SCSI to USB adapter with our scanners. SCSI scanners are not supported on Windows XP, the last supported operating system was Windows 98SE Please see the link bellow for information that will help you get SCSI scanner running with Windows XP.

I've certainly used a SCSI scanner under Windows XP with an internal PCI SCSI card, but not with a USB-SCSI adapter. IIRC the problem is just that XP doesn't come with an ASPI layer installed as standard, but once you install one it works just fine.

What kind of connector do you have on the PC end of the SCSI cable? I have a couple of old Adaptec PCI SCSI cards you can try if you like? One's an AVA-2906 with a 25-pin D connector, and a AHA-2940 with a 68-pin connector (see http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/a2zcables/externalscsiconnectors.gif). I have a bunch of cables too, so even if the supplied cable isn't right I may be able to fix you up.

You'll need a free PCI slot in your PC too which some newer machines don't have. Also if it's a laptop, you're pretty much scuppered.

i am actually using a lap top therefore a real SCSI card was not an option.

I have already installed the ASPI layer.

The SCSI to USB adapter is similar to this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220213699864&ssPageName=MERC_VIC_ReBay_Pr4_PcY_BIN_Stores_IT&refitem=220207653130&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&usedrule1=CategoryProximity&refwidgettype=cross_promot_widget&_trksid=p284.m183&_trkparms=its%3DS%252BI%252BSS

Ok, that's not an option then :(

Is this adapter actually a SCSI adapter with a USB interface, or does it attempt to con the PC into thinking that devices attached to it are actually USB attached?

The reason I ask is because in big red letters on that ebay page you have it says "For 50 SCSI Female Port Syquest, Jaz, and ext HDD, not for SCANNER OR PRINTER".

It may be that it's doing the latter, in much the same way as USB IDE/SATA adapters work, i.e. the drive appears as a USB attached device, not an IDE or SATA one, and that this only works for storage devices.

If so you might be better off with this http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Adaptec-SlimSCSI-1450-PC-Card-to-SCSI-Adapter_W0QQitemZ360034210684QQihZ023QQcategoryZ31494QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem which is a 'real' SCSI adapter (assuming you have a PC-Card / PCMCIA slot on your laptop and not one of the newer ExpressCard slots).

I think you are correct about the adaptor I have, i.e. it is trying to con the laptop that the SCSI is actually a USB.

The actual one I bought was http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220210173892&ssPageName=MERC_VIC_ReBay_Pr4_PcY_BIN_Stores_IT&refitem=220207653130&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&usedrule1=CategoryProximity&refwidgettype=cross_promot_widget&_trksid=p284.m183&_trkparms=its%3DS%252BI%252BSS

Which is ambiguous about scanners and printers.

I will look into the 'real' SCSI adapter option

First apologies for digging up the old thread

I bought a SCSI PCMCIA adaptor and now the Coolscan III is recognized on Windows XP (but not by Nikon Scan 3.1 which is a know issue I think)

I am trying to use VueScan 8.4.82 and even though it recognizes the CoolScan III as LS-30 I still cannot scan a slide

I insert the slide and when I select Scan VueScan returns the error 'The Scanner Is not Ready -Insert Film Into Scanner'.

I have tried turning the slide every possible way in the slot, turning on and off the scanner, restarting VueScan with the slide inserted but still no luck.

Has anyone had a similar problem? or even better has anyone a solution ?

Is there other scanning sw I could use?

One thing to note is that I bough the scanner on eBay and the seller sold it with the condition that they did not know if it was working or not (they did not have the SCSI cable). When turned on the green LED flashes and then goes solid.

Are there any other checks I can do to make sure the scanner is basically working correctly?

    No

Anyone here got a CoolScan, what does it do when it starts scanning ?, mine just sits there, makes no noise or anything.

i have the coolscan III; it should make some whirring and clunking noises when you power it up, and from memory, when you slot in the automatic film feeder.

First apologies for digging up the old thread me too ... :D

I've a nikon coolscan III but i havent used it since i've installed WinXP ... now i want to scan some frames but i cant ! ... thats the way i've found this post ! ... :D

ok ... i've followed all the instructions that gives NIKON...
    - use the 4.70 drivers for the SCSI unit, it seems to be ok.
in the hardware admin of winxp appears - A347SCSI controller
and PCI SCSI Adaptec AIC - 7850 Controller.
    - install the "new" nikon scan ...
    - i've messed with all the wires and connections ...

and im trying to scan some frames but i cant.
yesterday the nikon scan detected some hardware and started scanning but it gave some blue, red and green rays in the frame hole but nothing else. Doesnt work ! ... it gave me some error like "the scanner has reported a hardware error, the present function cannot be continued, SENSE:0x04620000 " or instead of this ... it hangs several times!

i've restarted it many times ... the computer too but it doesnt work! i switch on the scanner it makes some noise like moving something inside starts blinking green led and stops blinking led, like it used to do before, but nothing else.

ummmmm what can i do ? :pac:

    thanks a lot !

Please Dont tell me "its lupus" !

    - sorry about my poor english ...
