I thought long and hard before posting... well, at least 30 seconds of intense though - which is a lot for me.

the best game of the 20th century (the bit before gaming consoles killed the videogame arcade) was Golden Axe, with pac-man in second place.

you don't have to agree. but if you don't then at least trump it.

I think you'll have a few people disagree! R-Type, Arkanoid or if it's scrolling beat em ups it doesn't get much better then the CPS2 games like Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara :)

    Golden axe?! THE BEST?

I have to disagree. It was quite repeatative, to say the least. The magic was about the only thing worth seeing as when you'd seen them all that was the end of it.

oh right, trump it, ok then, Shinobi.

jeez... forgot about shinobi! that was a classic alright!
but did you not think smoe of the moves were gimpy? i have to admit, i wasn't a fan of games with a big learning curve where you had to learn moves etc. hence i was never into street fighter, except for when i wanted to get whipped.

Golden Axe has been better by loads of games in it's genre. Konami's Simpsons and X-men games were much better and offered 4 and 6 player experiences respectively. Many of Capcoms CPS 1 and 2 beat'em ups were way better than Golden Axe, Alien vs. Predator and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs being the best two of capcoms output. Even Segas dynamite cop/ die hard arcade games were just as excellent.

Have to agree with R-type being a very strong contender for best arcade game of the 20th century, no other game is as tightly and expertly designed imo, but Radiant Silvergun is arguably about the same quality.

There's also no denying the sheer genius and brilliance of the Street Fighter 2 games, far and away the best beat'em ups of the 20th century.

You could always tell a SF2 noob by them saying "but RYU and KEN are the same character"
Even in the World Warrior, Ken was much more set up for hit and dash or early combos, compared to one hit knock down Ryu

Well in world warrior they were very similar. I think ken could set up combos easily while ryu was the stronger attacker. Also Ryu had the stronger fireball while ken had the better dragon punch. Champion edition and beyond they were very different characters.

Also I'm not getting this recent belief that the combo system was due to a bug, especially annoyed with Games TM which takes it for gospel now. The characters were only balanced in world warrior when combos were taken into account.

It's a hard one to call. I'd say Golden Axe but my judgement may be clouded by the fact machine I used to play it on gave you a free credit every time you switched it off and on.

eh? another vote for Golden cax?
Hmm, Better fire up mame and give it a go again, maybe I missed something the first 100 times I've played it.

I mean, seriously? THE best? THEEEeeeee best?!

*grumble grumble mutter "lost their minds"* ;)

"Golden Axe" was pretty good but I preferred the Capcom games "Knights of the Round" and "King of Dragons".
