I wanted a Velvia saturated colour effect so I tweaked the "a" and "b" channels in Photoshop's Lab Color mode. The original was a RAW exposure.

    What think you?

I think, John, as usual, its very good, I like the vanishing point effect and just the general composition.

I don't feel qualified to comment on the velvia question (its not some thing I ever used), but would be interested, if you agreed, in seeing the non velvia version, and am also wondering if you have tried any of the Lightroom velvia presets out there.

Nice shot John and I like the saturation levels in this. I've looked at it for a while and there's something jarring with me though and I don't think its the composition. I think maybe that shadow through the middle foreground is what's preventing my eye from running as freely as it should through the scene. That's my 2 cents, hope it makes, erm... sense!

I love the photo, The colours are brilliant. but have to agree with the comment on the shadow, If you moved forward a little there is no shadow, Overall a fantastic photo

Also where do you go to find those settings the "a" and "b" channels in Photoshop's Lab Color mode

Here is how to to get the Velvia effect using Photoshop CS2:
    • Image/Mode/Lab Color
    • Press F7 to get the Layers/Channels/Paths dialogue box
    • Click on Channels
    • Click to the right of "a" - the screen will go gray
    • Click in the "eye" space to the left of "Lab" - the screen comes back to normal
    • Press Ctrl L to bring up the Levels box
    • The Input Levels will read 0/1.00/255
    • Dial in 40/1.00/215 (Whatever you add to the left e.g. 40 you subtract from the right
    • Press OK
    • Click to the right of "b"
    • Ctrl L and repeat the 40/1.00/215
    • Click OK
    • Image/Mode/RGB Color

    That's it.

This instruction recommends you change the input levels by adding 40 to the left and subtracting 40 from the right. It doesn't have to be 40 of course, try 50, 60, whatever. But if you add say, 50 to the left, be sure to subtract 50 from the right.

You don't have to use the same input levels for the "a" and "b" boxes either.

    I hope this makes sense!

    Regards,

    John
