Octo LNB Vs Quad LNB

    Hi,

I currently have Sky+ and two other Sky boxes one with a subbed sky card and the other I am using as an FTA box.

I now want to get Sky HD and keep my current subbed Sky+ box and add another subbed Sky+ box. Hence I need to change my quad lnb to an octo lnb.

I have two options of doing the above:

    1) Get sky in and let them do it all! Any idea of a price??
    2) Buy a Sky HD box and Octo lnb off the web and do it myself!

My main concern is that the octo lnb is going to be much heavier! Has anyone swopped an octo lnb for a quad one? Is there any chance of it bending the arm on the satellite dish?

    Many thanks for any advice!

Another option to consider is a multiswitch that can take the existing quad LNB feed and redistribute to a larger number of receivers.

Normally you would need a quattro LNB for a multi-switch but a number of brands do support quad LNBs aswell.

Considering you mentioned 8 feeds.. something like this would do the job...
    http://www.emp-centauri.cz/products.php?menuId=11&nazev=P.143-UP

You also have the option of adding an aerial feed to these switches and using diplexors at the receiver ends to split out the sat and terrestrial signal.

A lot of the EMP-Centari will work with a Quad. The larger switches with more than one set of LNB inputs need Quattros for the 2nd, 3rd etc LNBs.

On a Multi input Multiswitch, the Sky boxes only see the 1st input, so are compatible with Sky, Sky+ and SkyHD mixed with non-sky multiple Satellite receivers as long as the existing Sky Quad (or Quattro) is 1st set of 4 inputs.

The switch can go anywhere suitable in the house.

This sounds like a good option as the Centauri, while a great idea, costs about $150 plus shipping.

Hmm, cheaper than I'd expect them to be.

I have yet to order or use an Octo LNB.

    Cheers for the replies.

Am I correct in assuming that all four connections on the quad LNB go directly into the EMP-Centari and then I take the feeds directly from it to all the sky boxes?

I found the EMP-Centari here for €80 inc delivery.

I might give Sky a shout and see what they have to say for themselves, any Sky installers in the D13 area interested??

    Basically, yes.

That price doesn't seem too bad for the multiswitch.

That's because it's a StolenFromSky LNB. If you look at his feedback you'll see that everything he sells is an accessory that Sky installers carry. I guess the scam is that he goes out on a job and, on his work sheet, states that he had to replace this and this and that, but actually he doesn't. So the item he took out of stock but didn't use goes into his pocket for sale on eBay.

So, if your conscience doesn't prick and you don't mind the risk of handling stolen goods, go ahead and buy it at less than half of the trade warehouse price. As he states, it's a "genuine Sky part." It certainly is. ;)

About €120 from EMP Centauri direct.
Advantage is 16 outputs and upto 4 satellites in.

Also you can split a quattro or Quad on an EMP-Centauri and feed TWO multiswitches.

Just to update, I contacted Sky and they said they would install the Sky HD along with an Octo LNB and the cabling for the other 2 Sky+ boxes for €299! So I am happy with that.

    Cheers for all the replies,

    Branners

I remember reading a Powerpoint presentation on SkyHD installation where they discouraged the use of octo LNBs unless necessary, I think due to their cost.

    Correct. From slide 58:
    • The Octo LNB should only be used when a Quad LNB will not be sufficient
    • It is NOT to be installed as standard
    • There are substantial, financial, implications to our business if OCTO LNB’s are fitted where a Quad LNB is sufficient
    • Therefore ordering and distribution of Octo LNB’s will be closely monitored

considering the revelations here about ebay, anyone able to suggest a better bargain source for an OCTO?
