Apologies first of all if this is in the wrong forum.

As the the thread title suggests with all that has been happening in Tibet over the past week or so should there be a Boycott of this years Olympic games which take place in China as there was in 1980 and 1984.

Should there be a boycott of this years Olympic Games 31 votes

Where's the Atari Jaguar option? If you are looking for proper responses it may be better to post it in the politics forum.

Fair enough.:) If the mods see fit they can move it to the Politics forum. Just put it here as wasn't too sure whether or not it went in the Sports section or the Politics section.

Boycotting the olympics isnt going to fix things or make much of a point. It will probably serve to isolate the west further.

Change will take time and a big factor for driving the change is the chinese people themselves.

Any event that can help bridge a cultural gap or give the people deeper insight into foreign cultures are steps in the right direction, albeit baby steps.

Hell no. If we did that, the Chinese would win every event by default.

It's easy for us to say that athletes who have been training most of their life to compete at the Olympics should lose their chance by way of an Olympics boycott.

    Why the Olympics?
Why not a ban on importing Chinese products? ...oh but that would impact us

Like the Americans did when the USSR and its allies boycotted the LA games?

well, there are actually lots of campaign out there protest of Olympic in China.

why?simply as that spirit of olympic is nothing to do with this 2008 Olympic.human right?freedom?

just hoping the business it bring to china can satisfy them.

No way. Last week some Chinese official was quoted in the news telling off the US for applying double standards over human rights. I think he was absolutely right. The Chinese run a very brutal regime in many ways alright but to boycott the Olympics because the Chinese are running them would be incredibly hypocritical. The West needs to build bridges with China, not burn them.

Well I wouldn't be arsed going anyway so I suppose technically I'm boycotting it then.

Absolutely. China's treatment of it's own people is disgusting.
People have had their homes taken illegally without compensation because of the Olympics.

But hey, clearly any morals we have go out the window as long as we can get our 'stuff' cheap. :(

The decision to hold the olympics in China in the first place, without demanding an increase in human rights and the freedom of Tibet was the wrong decision. It should never have been allowed to go on there. Its now seen as the west backing China's stance on these things because China gets to have its olympics with no demands placed on them. To boycott it now would be an interesting political move, its just a pity that they didnt realise in the first place that those mad ****s shouldnt have an olympics to protest against.

Exactly...did that episode lead to a thaw in relations? Nope - just caused the Soviets to have a revenge boycott in LA; not much use politically and bad in a sporting sense.

sorry think this is crap your talking there.
It will make a huge point, if loads of people would boycott these games what signal does that give to the Chinese government?
No way they can isolate themselves anymore, now that few Chinese have had a good drink of a capitalist cup, no way they will go back.

Me i will boycott them, not only for Tibet but for all censorship, locked up people and political prisoners, go check amnesty international for a full list of reasons.

You've never been to china i take it.

What message does boycotting the olympics give to the chinese people? After the boycott what then? Saying that im talking crap doesnt correspond a response.
