Starting to really get into this show at the moment. Really funny but one thing bothers me....the preachy melodramatic bit they always seem to put in at the end? I hate it, why do they do it?

Anyone else feel the same way or do people actually like it?

P.S. Yes I am fully aware I have far to much time on my hands.

to be honest, i dont mind it. its one of those sitcoms i cud spend all day watching and that little bit at the end makes it a bit differant for me.

another way it differs from most sitcoms is the absence of the laugh track in the bakground, and i reckon with the laff trak and without the "preachy" bit it would just become another textbook sitcom!

i watch plenty of sitcoms like, but no harm in having a bit of variation in some of them

Was just discussing this the other day, I hate the laugh in the background so big thumbs up for that and I like the bit at the end too....Sex and the City, Desperate Housewives do it too and I like it.

Otherwise it would be just wacky and farcical, with crazy characters doing zany things in mad situations. Music, TV, films have to say something otherwise its just white noise.

In case you missed The Big Theme Of The Episode. (Same with Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, etc - look how we've tied all the narrative threads together, aren't we great!) ;)

Plus the JD-as-narrator thing is a fairly important part of the show, so I guess it fits in with that.

    +1.

I'm defo a fan of it too, especially in Desperate Housewives. If it does anything for the programme, it helps to make each episode unique by assigning a particular theme to each one, and kind of sums up the episode as a whole.

My favourite show, have all 6 seasons on DVD. I must have watched each one at least 15 times.

Oh I assure you I am not a philistine...far from it.

Its not that I mind it having a point or something to say (South Park does it all the time and I love it) I just think it is done badly.

Now dont get me wrong I LOVE the show and I am getting into it big time I just feel that bit at the end often comes across as cringey and sentimental. Part of the greatness about the show is the characters and what they are going through, Im not saying it should just be back to back jokes but the bit at the end always seems forced to me.

I also dont agree that it seperates it from other shows. The characters, wit and bizarre humour do an adequate job of separating it from the rest and as pointed out (desperate housewives, sex in the city, South Park) Plenty of shows do it. I just feel it is somewhat out of place in scrubs and the writers are more comfortable with the humour than the melodrama.

I do agree though a laugh track would kill the show (incidently there was an episode on yesterday where a good chunk of it was acted out as a traditional sitcom with laugh track and all:D)

I think JD's narratitives are all like that, he doesnt have much range.

I've always hated that preachy bit at the end. Suddenly the theme goes from wacky to someone dying and it's never smooth, just a little cringe-inducing.

That's what puts me off the show along with characters like JD's brother, possibly the most annoying screen character I've ever seen.

yeah i hated JD's brother and I felt they ruined the whole latest series with bringing in that ex- soldier(i think his name was private dancer) who is recovering for the whole series, dont like the actor, hes just so bad at acting and whenever he is in a scene everyone just goes all depressed.

Looking like the 'final' season (7) isnt actually the final one now. Because of the strike, ABC have planned an 8th season. As long as all the cast and writers stay, i'm happy enough.
