I.O. sats, How much is enough?

I haven't played one sat. this year for the I.O. after bubbling 3 or 4 times last year it nearly would've been cheaper just to buy in.This year i have decided to leave it late & tonight will be my first 1 to play in the sporting emporium. In the unlikely event that i don't get a ticket tonight i won't be too bothered as the 1500 event & cash games will be sufficent for the weekend. For me tonight is the 1st & last sat. to this event as i don't think there is any value in playing the super sat. tomorrow night, with the minimum spend most likely E900.(2000 chips is a joke for E300 i.m.o)
As i have said, i put a fair few quid into sats. last year to no avail(at least half the buy in) & i am just wondering how much have people got caught up in the race for tickets & put too much into sats.?Obviosly if you have the roll to play the main event regardless & you spend E3000 to get a E4500 ticket then good for you, but for people with smallers rolls(cough) how much is enough for one event?

    yo Johnny (you scumbag....WillieC here)

I think a man of your ability should play 2 max , if you fail just buy in or play a side event simple as. I think a buy in of 4.5K is too big unless it's a one off thing for you. The varience associated with tournys mean this is too big a risk. If I were a touring pro, I'd play the sats for everything .

    good luck

I never spend over 20% of a buyin to an event on sats and if it is less than 1500 buy in i just buy direct.

In this instance i would have budgeted 900 to sat into the Open, thankfully spent nowhere near that

I spent a total of 525 euros and got good value 2 bubbles and won 1300 in sporting emporium.
The satellites in both the sporting emporium and the fitz had excellent structures and were good value.
ID give it one last shot tonight but my head hurts.
I think 20%is enough to invest in a ticket but if your a winning player you are
eating into your profits by playing satellites between expenses and time consumed when u could be winning in cash games stts or whatever u are profitable at.

lets say sats cost €500 each and you think you have an edge in them and have enough of a bankroll for them edge but you don't think you're rolled to play the main event. Then why not keep playing sats? Even if you lose 10 in a row, if you still think you have an edge and the roll for it then play the 11th. It's only costing you an extra €500. Yes it sucks that you could have bought into the main event for less but that just means you ran bad over the last 10 sats, it doesn't mean anything for the next one. Just as if you had lost €5k playing cash games or in Bear Stearns stock.

If you don't think you have an edge in them or you don't feel you're bankrolled for them then that is a different matter. It's still OK to play a few sats to have a shot at playing a big tourney. Just remember that you are now playing partly recreationally, not wholly to make money, and that it's important not to gamble money you can't afford. You should play sats until it's no longer fun or you can't afford it, whichever comes first. That will be different for everyone so it's useless putting up a figure like "you should only play sats until you've lost 20% of the ticket value" without any more information on the player.

I think an important point here that many people don't realise is

You can be bankrolled to play 10 €500 sats, or even 100 of them, while still not being rolled to play the €5k main event.

very good and relevant points Dave and basically thats what I ended doing this year. But I think if you intend buying into the tournament either way a cut off point is not a bad thing, I understand that logically we should be able to treat the satts and main tournament as separate entities. However, take the situ i find myself in atm if I buy in now after the amount I've done on satts I know for sure I'm at a disadvantage mentally because I feel I've payed twice as much to play the tournament then I should of. I know its flawed thinking but I'm not spock and cant help feeling this way.

    very good point.

not really, a pretty moot point in terms of what the op is saying. Say you have a weekly roll of 500  which means you can play 52 sats a year. Regardless of your edge there is a point of diminishing returns on both your roll and your game. If you lose a few sats you fall into that deluded trap that gamblers find themselves in, ie they start chasing loses which in turn effects how they gmble/play...this is a most logical and human reaction Captain

    imo of course..

so 'normaly' how many should you play when your agenda is to qualify cheaply ..I would say no more than 2...

    live long and prosper
