Does nothing for me, a snap shot

me too I'm afraid, nothing very interesting.

I don't remember asking whether it did anything for you - I don't really care if it does anything for your pompous arse or not - I asked for pointers so if you don't have any then don't post anything!

I like the idea behind this photo. What's letting it down in my opinion is how dull the background it. There seems to have been just cloud overhead at the time and no sun. Have you tried cropping it in a little tighter and bringing up the contrast, colours in photoshop?

The black thing in the water (stone?) takes my focus from the people in the shot too, maybe cloning it out would be an idea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,297 ✭✭✭joolsveer

I think I would crop to the left of the figures so that they were not so central to the composition. I would try to increase the contrast too as the overall colour is grey.

I pretty much agree with michelleans. pardon the pun but its a bit washed out. i think you framed it well but the black yoke is a bit distracting.

also, just posting a link and saying 'any pointers folks' isn't likely to get the best of responses. loose the attitude and you'll more likely get better responses.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,361 ✭✭✭jaggiebunnet

Thanks for the pointers guys, I will give these suggestions a go.

Putting up a photo for C&C and then insulting replys is a little counter productive isn't it.

Its generally assume that people want honest opinions, thats what you got. Its also the reason i'd rather post here for C&C over flickr, honest opinions come here, piss weak posts with no content and made up awards, flickr

As for the photo, its a little dull, contrast and clone out the object in the water for me also

I fail to see how asking 'any pointers folks' portrays any attitude? Perhaps you could elaborate? Perhaps then I could lose the attitude that you think I have.

The photo as it stands is dull, personally I would have gotten closer in on the mother and child so they filled the frame. So maybe crop closer into them.

Because it is so dull I would convert to B&W and maybe do my normal dodge and burn routine to see if it makes it more interesting.

I think what was meant by lose the attitude is you should expect varying levels of criticism when you post a photo here for C&C. Some people will provide you with excellent feedback others will post a one liner. Saying a photo does nothing for them is a valid criticism, you should really not take it personally as liking photos depends on tastes etc. and no ones tastes are really the same.

Hmm lets draw our attention back to the photo.

It might have been better to stand on the other side of the couple with your back to the water (okay you probably would have gotten wet)- that way the light would have illuminated their faces, rather than just seeing their backs in shadow. There is not really anything to focus on to be honest - apart from that black blob which just draws your attention away from the supposed point of focus, the people! Don't be afraid to fill your frame either.

    Just my 2c.

Oh dear - someone got out the wrong side of the bed. Whilst "it does nothing for me" might not be the most constructive criticism ever, calling someone a pompous arse for saying it is not going to win you many friends I'm afraid. You asked for critique. Maybe being grown-up enough to take it would be a suggestion?

As for the photo, I'd have to agree. Its not doing anything for me either. I can see where you were going but the subject's not interesting enough. It takes a mighty shot to make someone's back a strong focal point. A tight portrait crop and some contrast might help it along a little. And yep - lose the object.

My own version, with quite a bit of photoshoppery:

Thanks for all the constructive and informative criticism guys - i appreciate it and will try and use it to better this and future photographs.

As for those who think it is useful, informative or anything else to come on and leave such a silly comment as "does nothing for me" with no informed opinion as to why it does nothing for them, then that is ok too, I think folk who do that shouldn't bother posting as it is obviously not useful to anyone, so, with that in mind, can the mods please lock this thread before it becomes a flame war.

    Would you feel the same if people left comments like;
"really like this shot", with no informed opinion as to why they really like it

    Exactly!

Back on topic. The photo and the concept i actually think has potential although the the source material in terms of light, colour, etc... may not be there. To the actual image itself - i'd clone out the stone being thrown and leave it as a looking out to sea image. There's a very minor straightening of the horizon required. I think i'd try a vignette if trying to improve the creativity of the shot. Also i think if you've enough megapixels available to you and still able to produce a suitably large print, i'd put a portrait crop on it to take the shot out of its landscape format.

If taking sometime again, i'd try get more perspective by including more beach and perhaps try to shoot from a lower angle - i'm thinking in this case you were standing shooting whereas if you got down to the subject level it may improve the overall composition. Also i think i'd take in a wider angle if you absolutely intend to shoot in landscape. Otherwise a portrait format of shoot can work particularly well in these shots.

    Cheers.

Another good tip i got from my local camera club is to go back to the same location again when the light and sky is more interesting and re-take the shot again and trying to learn from your mistakes and make it more interesting the 2nd time round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Calina

I would have shot it from a lower angle to be honest with you. Camera is pointing too far down and you would have had a more interesting perspective had you knelt down a little bit for example. Also because you're pointing down, the sea looks flatter than it needs to.

Colours are, however, a little on the flatside and tbh although you could give a shot converting it to black and white I'd think there really isn't enough contrast for it to work. You could try removing some of the detail on the subjects of the photograph and making it a silhouette shot and maybe the convert to bnw and fling a filter over it. I'd be angling towards a bluish filter myself but that's a question of taste.

As a general note, if you are concerned with improving your photographs, asking for any pointers implies you have recognised things you want to improve. Telling us what they are would help as we can get a better idea of what you want to achieve.

I'm sorry I haven't seen this thread sooner, I've been offline.

If you put your photograph up for C&C, you may have to face the fact that people are not interested in it. While constructive comments may not come out of "I don't find it very interesting", it is a start.

If you are posting here for C&C, you are asking everyone for C&C, from people with years of experience, to people that just pop on to the forum.

Personally, I don't find it to be an interesting photograph, as already stated, peoples rears facing the screen need to be quite strong to make it an interesting photograph, a lower angle may emphisise the scene, but I think it needs more work to make it stand out.

Infraction for insulting other members eh Fajitas - what a sad little person you must be - you are right, it is a pity you didn't see this post sooner , you would have given me a good laugh.

Don't bother banning me, I will close the door on the way out.

Guys, everyone has to start somewhere. You have to realise if this is your first C&C (daunting to some), it can be quite startling to have responses as blunt as 'it doesn't interest me' - not saying there is anything wrong with that either.

Jaggiebunnet, this is not normally how C&C posts end up - i think you got off to a bad start and there are some crossed wires - they're a nice bunch (mostly ;)).

How about we all start again :)

Never got to see the pic but to give an infraction is OTT, why are mods on boards so overzealous compared to other sites?
    Heres a video I shot a while back :p

If you have a problem, go to feedback. There's nothing overzealous about infracting someone for insulting members of this forum. You were banned for insulting members here before.

If you have a problem, go to feedback or find someplace else.

Theres the attitude again and my ban was so petty.....I can have an opinion here surely without you telling me basically to sod off elsewhere?

    Learn to roll.......

    :)

No he is telling you that there is an appropriate forum to post your complaints. Maybe you should learn how a community works before you jump in. Just because its ok in another forum doesn't mean its ok here.

What he is basically saying if you don't like it no one is forcing you to post here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭AnimalRights

I never knew there was a whitewash, er I mean feedback forum, are you a mod in waiting by any chance?
    :pac:

If you post on Helpdesk then only smods and admins can reply, as I said learn the community before you jump in with both feet first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

    And Locked.

You were banned for insulting members on the forum. As Gandalf said, learn how a forum works before diving in. If you have a problem, there are forums there for it, not here. If you prefer the way another site works, I'm not going to try make you stay here.

I don't think Gandalf is by any means, a mod in waiting either.
