Work Contract Questions

At present the work I am is experiencing a downturn. I signed a new contract last November but now they want to change the goalposts. Before I had travel and phone expenses, an ok base salary and commission. Now they want to double the commission, cut my base salary by 70%, and there will be no travel or phone expenses (my job involves travelling).

This leaves me in a very precarious position. It would cost them very little to get rid of me because I have only been there for a year, but I need to know what rights I might have to get a better deal off them???

Can you afford the loss in salary? If you can't then i suggest you should start looking.....
70% is a lot to take from your annual salary, is this negotiable? As for your rights, i would have thought it was illegal to reduce an employees salary by 70%

I suppose my problem is how much wriggle room do I have with this reduction in salary before I am told on your way! As I said for them to get rid of me would not cost them much.

All going well it would be fine if the commissions increase a bit, but at the moment that is a big if.

Find another job quick but at the same time negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. Look at your base salary and see how much you could afford to decrease it by. If that figure is 40% then start at 20%. If they want 70 and you say 20 they might meet you in the middle at 45. But be prepared to go elsewhere when they say no. The ball is really in your court.

start job hunting now. if they are willing to do this to you now, then what lies ahead. there is nothing to stop them coming back at the end of the next contract and saying no more salary and commission only. if they are crazy enough to cut your salary by 70% i wouldnt put it past them.

70% !!!!!! are they for real???? you could live without the phone and travel, once you arent paying for it out of you own pocket. but cutting the salary by that much is insane. if you are still expected to travel and use you phone but arent getting paid for them anymore then that is seriously insulting.

just get online and start job hunting now.

i presume becuase you get commisison you are in sales or an account manager but what industry are you in?

I am in auctioneering, there are no jobs out there so I suppose they feel they can basically do what they want. But it is very insulting because there is only a doubling of the commission but a bigger comparative drop in salary. And then to not even cover expenses, might as well be working for myself!
