...Alan Moore, DC, Marvel or Neil Gaiman.
I'm looking for ideas on what to get next. My favorite that's not in the above category has to be Glimmer Rats.

I couldn't pick one, just because there are so many things to choose from outside of that category. The first thing to come to mind is the Flight anthology series, but I'll have to have a rummage through my pile o' comics later and see what else I can dig out. It's worth checking out the Fantagraphics and Drawn & Quarterly stuff if you're looking for something a bit different from the likes of Marvel & DC.

The Walking dead is a worth a look. Very enjoyable stuff.Good characthers and stories that just happen to occur durning the Zombie Holocaust.

IDW Transformers but that's only if you really Dig Giant Robots and who dosen't.Nice
IDW Angel and Spike Comics have also provide much amusement.

Invinceable is a Great superhero Tale and has some excellent Volience.
    Plus some really enjoyable art.

Les Coeurs Solitaires by Cyril Pedrosa - yes its in french and I haven't seen an english trans version around but doesn't matter - the art is fantastic and the story is pretty clear even with limited/no french.*

    Anything by Pierre Alary

    The Blot by Tom Neely

Sounds of your name by Nate Powell - Forbidden planet had a couple of copies ages ago but no clue if they still have them - you can order online.

    HellCity 1 by Joe Flood

Essex County Trilogy by Jeff Lemire like the name suggests its three graphic novels

Paul gets a summer job and Paul moves out both by Michel Rabagliati

*just remembered First Second books have translated Pedrosa's three Shadows into english - click on link to see preview pages

Paul Gets A Summer Job is awesome! Must pick up copies of all the Paul stuff one of these days, the first story I read of it in one of the Drawn & Quarterly anthologies had me hook line and sinker.

Zorro by Dynamite is worth a look. Its a year-one retelling by Matt Wagner complimented by great pulp art from Francesco Francavilla .

Zorro #1 was one of the best comics I have read, it really brought me back to those old saturday mornings of old, all we need now are black beauty and Flash Gordon comics to make the experience complete!

Lone Wolf and Cub by Kazuo Koike.

Godland by Joe Casey and Tom Scioli from Image comics is phenomenal, sort of like Jack Kirby meets Grant Morrison with extra madness added. The hardcover of the first 12 issues is a good place to start.

Dead@17 by Josh Howard from Viper comics is a good read, there are several collected editions available.

When you mention glimmer rats I'd guess you were after sci-fi stuff and in that case Heavy Metal magazine usually has a good graphic novel length story in it. Pat Mills has had 2 great series in the last few years collected in HM magazine, SHA and Requiem both drawn by french artist Olivier Ledroit.

"Cages" by Dave Mckean. The most beautiful and honest drawings I've ever seen used in comics. Wonderful characters, great story, unsurpassed storytelling. Simply amazing.

    Charley's War - Pat Mills/ Joe Colquhoun
    Blankets - Craig Thompson
    Torso - Bendis/ Andreyke
    Maus - Art Spiegelman
    Black Hole - Charles Burns

    Brodies Law

If you can read this, you're too close!

This looks like it's at risk of turning into a list thread, and I'm not a big fan of those. Please take a bit of time to elaborate on why you like the comics you're suggesting, as lists by themselves don't do much to encourage discussion.

As I said before, I couldn't pick just one favourite that's not mainstream american comics, because the field is so big. The new slimmed-down Flight book is out now, so Flight is near the top of my list, but I've also read Paul Goes Fishing recently and it was also really good. On a more cerebral bent there's the likes of How Loathsome (about alternative sexualities), David B's Epileptic (about growing up with an epileptic brother), Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan, and plenty of others. Then you've got the likes of Jim Woodring's Frank (absolutely stellar silent comics about a purple...cat? guy? thing? called Frank) or demented fun like The Island Of Dr Moral.

BPRD is the best comic out there for me. And Mr Amperduke. Sorry.

Yes, Spunko, BPRD rocks. I love Guy Davis. We are to be married.
