it has come to my attention that one does not need any kind of licence or permission to possess the arms used in the game of airsoft?!
Now i am a very liberal girl and do think that involvement in any sport or activity is great, but when my nephew picks up an airsoft weapon and points it at his grandmother and nearly gives her a heart attack the fun stops!!! The same nephew tought it would be hilarious to borrow the gun from his dad and bring it to school to scare the bigger kids who apparently scare them! Is this against the law?
when i probed more into the sport i thought it to be a sad sad excuse for grown men to pretend they are playing cowboys or something with guns'!!!
Each to their own i understand that, but tell me the legal stance on such arms, because arent pellet guns illegal?

    Hi She Devil
Pellets are lead or steel but airsoft are plastic as far as I understand?

If an airsoft gun is of less than one joule in power (i.e. it shoots a BB weight .2 grams from the barrel with a velocity of less than 328 feet per second) they are legal to own.

However, they should only be used on private land with the permission of the owner. Pointing them at people, waving them around in public, or generally misusing them can, and should, have very serious legal consequences.

You don't mention the age of your nephew, but if he's old enough to know better, he deserves to be severely punished for such stupidity.

airsoft devices are perfectly legal as long as the come under 1 joule.
    =firing a .20ggram bb at 328ft per second,

its a very safe sport .what our nephew did was extremly stupid ,
we play in a designated area and use various protection aids,

your nephew could have been charged for what he did,

These airsoft guns are not the same as typical "pellet guns", which shoot steel pellets, and are far more powerful. These Airsoft guns are not illegal if they are under the 1 joule limit, and therefore a license isnt required.
Now your nephew aiming the gun at anyone to scare them is stupid and careless and you wont find anyone here who would condone it, no chance.
And brining it to school is just is just insane, and the Guards would prop deal with it very harshely. If someone perceives the gun to be real then your nephew is commiting assaul, which obviously is illegal.
Look in the newbie, legality thread to fin out more.
As for a sad excuse that isnt really fair, after all lots of people play paintball and thats very popular and not generaly looked down on.
Also coming onto an Airsoft forum and talking bad about airsoft is preety weak.

If they produce less than 1 joule of energy then they are not considered a firearm.

They are not 'Airsoft Weapons'. Look up the definiton of the word. It only becomes a weapon when used as such.

Your nephew is a complete moron and runs the possibilty of being shot by the police if he does things like that. If you use a replica in a manner where people may think it is a firearm then as far as the law is concerned, it is a firearm and you will be tried and conviced as such.

You need to do your research. Pellet gun = fires a lead projectile at well over 1 joule and is a firearm.

Airsoft fires a plastic spherical projectile and for it to not be considered a firearm here must be under 1 joule of muzzle energy.

I hope that answered all your questions, as I'm now going to lock this thread.
