Has anybody here climbed Aconcagua. I see it is possible to do as a non climber, but is that a crazy idea? I'm hoping to head to South America in August and I would love to attempt it. What time of year is best to go, what group is best to go with (Any experiences...).What could you do in Ireland to prepare...just work on general fitness? I'm probably being naive about this but I really would like to do it if possible.

You can't just walk up like the sugarloaf. It kills plenty of people every year (mainly due to the extremely changeable and dangerous weather). It takes several days to get up and down in the best case. If you've no real mountaineering (as opposed to hillwalking) experience then you should get a guide if you really want to do it.

Bumping this thread. Has anyone done an Aconcagua tour recently?
Would you need much 5000m+ experience before doing it?
