Has anyone else played this little blinder of a game? It's a facking fantastic turn-based combat strategy game, definetly in the top 10 DS games so far. I got this last Summer and I am still playing it. Actually stuck on Mission 24....for over 6 months now! They should make a version for the Wii, that would be awesome.

The ds version wasn't the only one you know! The series has been around since the NES but was brought back to life on the gameboy advance.

But i agree with you, those games are amazing! Perfect balance and playability. Great learning curve.

The new ds version (days of ruin) is really cool also.

Also, there was to be a wii version but it didn't live up to the greatness of the handheld versions so they released it as "batalion wars" instead without any connection to advance wars. It doesnt look very goodn

I've seen Battalion Wars 2 on the Wii, didn't think there was any connection - mind you, it makes a little sense, BW is just a more action orientated, hands-on version of Advance Wars. Is Intelligent Systems (or whoever made AW) part of Nintendo?

I've seen AW on the Gameboy but I'm not too sure I want to pick it up just yet, I dearly love it on the DS. I'll clear AW before I get the second one. Mission 24 is a biatch, I've been trying to clear it for ages. It's the kind of gameplay that really hooks you in, and I think it's one of the best examples of what a great game the DS can produce.

Advance wars is one of the finest examples of portable gameplay. you can play it for a short while or you can let it suck you in. Great game based on simple graphics and great gameplay. Plus the fact that it has multi-player with only one console is great.

Yeah i had a mission like that on the gba. Even though you get annoyed, the game is so good that you keep trying! And its so good the way something tiny like the placement of an artillery unit could change the outcome of a battle! Or how a slightly different approach makes all the difference.

I think it's Mission 25 actually =/...was playing it yesterday and came within a inch of victory, had 1 more enemy unit to defeat! It can get very intense, I didn't realise until lately that you could choose different COs and they can alter the outcome of the game.

Days of Ruin got rid of all the annoying things in Dual Strike (overwhelming CO powers, Tag-attacks, Neotanks etc) and balanced it out.
And it got rid of that annoying hero-protagonist with his try-hard surfer/gamer-speak. In his place, we now have a cynical-yet-girly officer Lin, whose deadpan humour is classy :)

I adore this game, and quite frankly couldn't care less if my Dual Strike cart gets crushed by a bus.

I'm thinking of buying the new one for online play. Whats it like online?

What you mean't to say Kev, was you downloaded the GBA version onto your laptop to backup the real GBA version you have, because we all know that it's perfectly legal to have ROMs and emulators as long as you have the real thing, right? ;)

Battalion wars isn't really related to Advance Wars, and there was a version on the GC as well. Very different, and decent fun, but definitely not as good as advance wars.

And it's not so much that it was "brought back to life" on the GBA... It's just that it was first given a western release on the GBA. In Japan, they had versions for NES, SNES and Gameboy.

And yeah, Intelligent Systems is an internal division of Nintendo, and one of my favourite developers. They're the creators of Paper Mario, Warioware, Advance Wars and Fire Emblem.

Speaking of which, if you like advance wars, you should like Fire Emblem. It's a pretty similar mechanic, but it's in a fantasy setting, with RPG elements such as levelling up characters and buying/selling items & weapons.
The original (at least original in a non-Japanese sense) one on the GBA is my favourite. Stay away from the Gamecube and Wii fluff versions.

Incidentally, Days of Ruin is the US title. Eurogamers would call it AW:Dark Conflict.

Mmmmh, weak dollar + Play-Asia 20% Easter sale...
