seeing as we have no out halfs to cover for ogara should something happen or for wc 2011 he is too old.

am I crazy or can a person be converted into an out half? like once someone has a good boot, good pass could we just make them an out half?
get someone to train their kicking skills ,kicking posts isnt an issue as loads of players can and someone on the team could do it,if the new fake out half coudnt.

could you take a player like kearney or fitzgerald and turn them into an out half?I think hernandez for argentina is a 15 and they had him at out half keeping out contepomi?who in turn kicked the goals
I amnt a coach so dont slate me for asking could fitz or kearney be converted to out half for country?lol similar to argentinas setup

    1. We have Jonathan Sexton, who would have got capped if it wasn't for injury, and possibilities with Niall O'Connor, Ian Keatley, Ian Humphries and Andy Dunne

    2. Moving Hernandez to FH, allowed Argentina to accomodate Corletto at FB, and Felipe at IC where he is best suited to.

Eoghan Hickey (LI), Paul Warrick (possibly) - we have a fair few players that need to be exposed at high level.

And what matches do we have to blood any of them in? Yeah thats right against the SH teams, none of them is up to the standard of international rugby, the only one that would be safest option at the moment would be Andy Dunne

Sexton is probably ROG's natural successor, hopefully he'll be fit and playing well again for the summer tests.

Outside of that, I think we need to bring Ian Humphreys home and get him playing HEC for Ulster.

it would have been good too see sexton in an Ireland shirt alrightHe looks like he has a bright future,i only asked the question because they might not be good enough but I suppose they would still be better than a botched replacement

We need to take some risks with out halfs to be honest. We're relying on ROG far too much, these guys need to be given a chance to step up to the plate and see how they do.

From what I've seen of Eoghan Hickey at LI he looks legit. Certainly a possibility.

How many HC matches did Sexton start this season? I just remember him coming on against Leicester in Welford Road and having Rabeni injure him.

Playing Sexton would mean dropping Contempomi or D'Arcy at that stage.

warwick is not eligible to play for Ireland.

Sexton has potential but his kicking from hand is too slow still.

With D'Arcy/BOD out right now at least that won't be an issue. hopefully Sexton will be back soon. Leinster seem to play better with a 10.Sexton/12.Conters midfield anyway.

But the problem is that Sexton doesnt kick for Leinster so how do we then go about rating his goal kicking? Thats why id be weary to start him in a Irish jersey .

That's not his fault. The IRFU are accountable for that. At the end of the day he is the best opportunity we have to develop a World Class Fly-half. As a Leinster fan I don't want to see Pomi or D'Arcy dropped but some kind of rotation is a must if we don't want to end up like Italy with that guy Masi.

The guy actually has a decent boot on him, but yeah, he needs to be let use it. He needs to be brought on when games are wrapped up, he needs to play against lesser teams, and risks need to be taken now and again by playing him against some of the bigger teams. This is what Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger do in the Premier League, why should this league, and sport, be different?

Eoghan Hickey's been playing some tidy rugby for LI this season...watched him against Wasps at the weekend, not a bad performance at all....

Here's another thing - I'm watching the Muster Schools final right now, and Castletroy<sp?>, who look to be a very capable team (no expert on school's Rugby, but they must be one of the best young sides in the country, from the last 15 mins I've watched). And guess what??? Their Number 5 is taking all their kicks!!!

Now I ask you? At that level that is just wrong. And people ask where all the young Fly-halves are. The best young side in what is probably the best Rugby-playing province in this country and they don't have a kicking Fly-half.

    :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Forwards that take kicks are internally confused and should never be considered real forwards, unless your Zinzan Brooke but thats a different story

I do. Seriously, Leinster seem to play better with Conters in midfield (he's a better 12 than 10) and Leinster are often desperately in need of a controlling out-half, something Conters clearly isn't. It means dropping/rotating one of D'Arcy or O'Driscoll, but c'est la vie. I can think of worse situations to be in.

contepomi is a better 12 than darcy anyway, wouldnt bother me

Apart from the fact that this thread is about developing Irish players, not foreign ones.

Which Leinster would be doing by playing Conters at 12 and giving game time to Sexton at 10. It does leave a problem at IC though, but the D'Arcy/BOD axis was hardly setting the world alight anymore.

Id love to see hickey get a run out too.

Sexton's injuries will be the biggest obstacle in his development, but I think Niall O'Connor will be the future fly half of Ireland anyway. The Churchill Cup should be a good development tool for him. I think it would be better used on him rather than Dunne or Humphreys.

Well hopefully with a new coach they'd have enough foresight to give their backup fly half more than 3 minutes a game when he does get capped.

U are assuming they get rid of his ass... I mean to buy him out will cost a fortune. Money they may not have.If he dosent resign we are truly screwed

Not to mention then cleaning up the backroom staff, then hiring a new coach and a new backroom staff its going to cost the IRFU more then they have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

The IRFU have the money, they've been squirrelling it away for years.

Eddie will get the boot this week, hopefully along with all of his back room staff, but we'll probably just get a cost effective replacement.

I guess I'm the eternal optimist that way. Either that the IRFU has enough cash, Eddie realizes he's crap or both.
