Hi I really need help, I was doing a favour for somebody else and I hooked there desktop up to my monitor, now when I hook my desktop up the monitor, it loads for half a minute then the signal to my computer just goes dead. Any ideas how I can fix this?

is it dvi or vga (d-sub) connection? Try plugging out the monitor and turn off the pc, reconnect the monitor, power it on and boot the PC

Its a VGA connnection, the computer will boot up in VGA mode but when I try to put 16bit or 32 bit colour on through the display settings the screen just goes into stand by.

Check that the screen resolution is set to one that the monitor can display. Set it to as low as it can go first and then increase it.

Yeah I tried that alright, its starts in VGA mode but once I increase the resolution whatsover and apply changes the screen just reverts into standby mode!!!
