I used to use Easynews, and found them good. It was around $10 per month/20GB.

Also had a handy Zip manager on their site

yeah, if you're not a cheap bastard newsgroups are the way to go. I am a cheap bastard though, so I stick with torrents.

Negligible cost for a superior system thats pure leech.

I'm with Giganews myself, best I've found so far.

Giganews looks good alright with their 200 day retention. Easynews only has 40days file retention.

However, after looking at 100proofnews, which redirects to iusenet.com, it offers 110 day retention for $9 per month/25GB.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

Giganews has a core EU server (in holland), last time I checked most providers didn't provide EU servers, or just resold giganews.

Nice that thundernews will recycle at the signup price, so 4.37pm @ 15GB is very nice.

Newzbin is a must for any newsgrouping, but you all know that already :p

I've read about them, but still don't really understand how to actually download anything from them...can anyone explain how you actually go about downloading something, where do you get the links etc.

Rapidshare is €55 (I think) for a year long account and it gives you 25GBs every 5 days. Much better value for money.

it does require a bit of research to get into. stick "newsgroup faq" into google.

as mentioned above its MUCH better than torrents. to refuse to pay 5 euro a month for a far superior service is madness if you regularly download.

Does anyone know if the different newsservers offer the same files just in a different package?

I use easynews and love the zip manager and global search feature.

I use www.newshosting.com $189 for the year works out about 10 euros a month. Well worth it
    110 days retention
    Unlimited Download allowance.
    20 connection,
And they don't seem to mind you connecting from multiple IP address.
Meaning you could go half's with a friend(or friends) 10 connection each(5 max out my 6 meg connection) and a fiver a month for unlimited downloads

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,517 ✭✭✭axer

I use hitnews.eu. €6.50 per month for unlimited.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭The Sparrow

So why are newsgroups better than torrents? are they faster or do they just have a greater selection?

hitnews.eu sound good looking at 36 euro for 6 months

What in the name of god do ye guys be downloading, 20GB a month?
I wouldn't do that in a year. Am I missing something.

Which newsreaders are people using? Is there any decent free ones out there. I am just getting in this newsgroup lark and have started using GrabIt, but I dont mind spending a reasonable amount for a superior programme.

Is there any other vital programmes out there?

    much faster .
torrents are crap, way too slow.

i agree with almighty cushion, rapidshare is fastest/easiest

Dunno about that. There are alot of torrents sites where I get 1.5Mb/s. My friends will get 3+. Newsgroups are far more complicated, but if privacy is your worry then it's the way to go.

Off rapidshare I can usually have 4 downloads going at once with them totalling in and around 8-10MBps (yes, megabytes). Only get those speeds in college though. :(

maybe im doing something wrong, but torrents take forever for me.

they trickle down at maybe 10kb or less.
but i can download from rapidshare at 220kb

so for a film that takes me just 1 hour to download on rapidshare can take maybe 24 hours on torrents

Who's your isp? Some like ntl throttle torrents.

Sounds more like a port forwarding issue to me. You need to port forward to accept remote connections - speeds up torrents considerably.

i have heard about this, but i dont understand it.
so yes this could be (probably is) causing my problems with torrents

If you connect to your router there'll be something somewhere called port forwarding or Applications and Gaming. You will need to forward some ports there to allow remote connections in torrents. For Azureus I forward 6881 to 6969. Other clients may be different.
