Shot these last night when I called over to collect friends to go to a party. The girl has just moved into a new place which is rather unusual 1 bed mews type place, alot of open plan, large rooms. Shot these 2 very quickly and for me, I'm happy with them. Portraiture would be one of the things I'd struggle with alot.
Sophie wasn't very keen on having her shot taken and wanted me to delete this straight away. I hope she'll be glad I didn't? Think they were shot at ISO 3200.

    pete

    I prefer the first

I wonder should you crop the top so the hat is the same distance away from the edge as it is on the right

the only thing i am not fussed on is the noise in the background, particularly on the left i find it a little distracting

The first one could look interesting in square format - it is very nice diagonal composition.

a little grainy due to high iso, but apart from that great, i like the first,
Tell sophie not to be so shy, :)

    Thanks Mellor,

The thing is, Sophie isn't shy in the slightest...apart from in front of a camera it seems!

I commented on these on your flickr - think they look great:) I'd suggest a square crop on the first one too though - it was the one thing I was gonna suggest last night. I think there's maybe a little too much skin? Might work a bit better with the bottom quarter or so taken out? Not that you asked or anything ;)

I really like them. I love grainy photos anyways, but it really suits in these two. I'd go with the square crop in the first, taking out the bottom of the image. Second one is spot on. :)

I'd say a crop to lose some of the excess skin would improve it, thanks Sinead.
I'll try a square crop to see how it works.

    Pete.

I agree on the square crop on the first.

I actually prefer the second one. There's more texture on the face, and he just seems really natural in the photo.

The grain on the first image looks more like facial fuzz to me. It also seems to be distributed unevenly and oddly. Grain normally lives in the underexposed or shadow areas, and here it seems populate the highlights more than the shadows. In particular from her nose to her neck.

Love the second one, the only thing I find remotely distracting is the bottom of his left ear peeping out. Still though, he'd look odder without it :)

    Congrats!
