Can you use butane gas in pistols as in the those big bottles that you would use for your cooker?

Don't do it. not safe, not suitable, if your loking for cheap gas it has to be Propane, available from B+Q, or any welders suppliers.

Yep, propane will do the trick. Its exactly the same as green gas, just with an added smell.

Can I just point out that Butane is also called LPG, or Liquid Petroleum Gas. We all know what petroleum based stuff does to rubber (seals, hop-up, etc).

    actually.....

lol, it can work in pistols, Not so much in GBBs since its doesnt have the the pressure to throw the slide back., it should work in a NBB but it wouldnt have nearly as much power as Propane., i used it once in a cheap NBB and it was working ok.,

id recommend getting a propane adapter for bout 20quid and using pure propane though, its more powerful and less hassle and harm.,

I take that propane adpater would fit onto a gas tank of propane that you can buy at a garage.

the ones in B&Q are the ones ya need.,

It also has atomised silicon in it for lubrication.

I didn't think of that :pac:

Most of the propane adaptors come with a small bottle of silicone oil to mix with it though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

It's not as good as atomised silicon but it still helps since propane is a dry gas. The presence of the silicon increases the mass of the gas which slows it's expasnive reaction speed, thereby reducing the pressure somewhat. That's why propane produces, on average, 15-20fps more than green gas.

It should be noted, though, that green gas is now cheaper than propane. And better for your gun too.

why do people use propane anyway?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 11,001 ✭✭✭✭Masada

coz thats what green gas is., only popane is cheaper.,

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 690 ✭✭✭Popanddrop

oh right, thanks for clearing that up for me:D`never knew much about GBB`s/NNB`s because I have always been using AEG`s but I got my first gas pistol today and I must say I am very impressed.

They say they're disposable for a reason, they are much much lower quality cans and I wouldnt be advising it.

Yeah, dodgy, very supect....tell you what, you ave an apple! refill one of those handy blue propane tanks, from a larger tank! Vtec you sure about that? unless it's some gas guy specialist, and to be honest i'd rather give him the tank in exchange for another. These min blue ones were only ever designed as dissposible ones. these bottles are throw away, plumbers and welders use them for small jobs, they were never really designed for refilling. If that was the case, B+Q and every other supplier would be asking for the old one, and they don't.:)

There is a system to unload the larger ones, Restaurants use them, When I worked as as waiter, years ago in a Chinese Restaurant they used them piped into the kitchen. I'm sure they still do but you'd want to be really sure about it man.

what size is a blue tank of propane like the ones you get at the garage? Are they the same size as those yellow butane bottles?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

The Bernzomatic ones can be refilled from bigger bottles, you just gotta make sure you use a regulator with a pressure gauge so you don't overpressure the bottle. One of the lads in work does it all the time for blowtorches from his main tank. I must find out where the adaptor he uses comes from.

Guys, for safety, do you really want to fecking around with this stuff?..no.

Go and buy these handy sixed ones, their safe, practical, handy and still reasonably cheap compared to anything else, if you decide to use them.

I'm sure Bullets won't mind me useing a link to his pics.

yep those propane tanks in B&Q are actually designed to be refilled, (hence the refil valve and reinforced body) im gonna get an adapter to refill them off the 6ft tanks in the body shop that are very cheap in comparason., also, that gas in the resteraunts is butane, i was looking into that myself, the missus has a family chinese takeaway and would have been great if i could free load the gas out of there.,:D

EDIT: popanddrop, the tanks your looking for are about a foot tall., if you get it in B&Q it will be in a blue tank with "Bernzomatic" name in it., thats the only one that the propane adapter will fit, it will not work on butane bottles like those in superser heaters etc., in B&Q it will be in or near the plumbing section., ;)

I already have the adapter necessary to refill from large tanks, but it's got an american tank fitting on it and need to get another adapter to actually use it, paul has it at the moment, he was supposed to pickup the extra fitting but never got a chance, ask him for a look at it next time your down

Butane and propane, diesel, petrol are all made of the same stuff, hydrogen and carbon.

Propane has three carbons and butane has four, methane ethane all the same family.(I really don't remember)

Its all very similar stuff though, so if propane doesnt wreck a hop, butane shouldn't.

And mind the remarkable farty smell of Propane, which can take some explaining if you're sharing your living place!
