Crosstrainer & Fitness

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this but thought people here would probably know the answer to my question.

Looking to improve my fitness generally at the moment and have been mainly using the crosstrainer in the gym. Just wondering whether the resistance level or just the length of time on the machine is more important for cardiovascular fitness? Not interested in building muscle.

    Any advice would be great.
