I wonder what the odds are on the Honey Monster making an appearance in the next series :D

The Mighty Boosh's Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt are reportedly angry at breakfast cereal Sugar Puffs for copying their singing style on a TV advert, The Sun reports.

The comedy duo are taking issue with the cereal brand, famous for its Honey Monster character, for using their "crimping" singing technique.

"A pal of the Mighty Boosh boys was lying in his pants watching daytime telly and saw the advert, a source revealed.

"He rang the Boosh and congratulated them on their work for Sugar Puffs.

"They were baffled and checked it out on the internet. They hadn’t been asked permission to use the style and are speaking to lawyers about getting the Honey Monster’s crimp removed from the airwaves."

Crimping is the singing of short songs based on random objects and events that are delivered by the characters Vince Noir and Howard Moon in each Mighty Boosh episode.

Posting on the YouTube clip of the advert, one Boosh fan wrote: "How dare they steal the crimp! Noel and Julian are the only crimpers in these parts..."

Another added: "I'm never buying Sugar Puffs again."

In a way, they should be flattered. I'd have less respect for them if they took legal action and sued.

What about Howards JuJu beads? They started it.

Personally I'd like to see all products and services advertised via the power of the crimp in future.

id hate to see them take legal action... it takes them from being a small freindly type love, to a more... seemingly corporate love... which makes it a little less lovable.

Sugar puffs are the devils dangleberries, and as such, are not worthy of the crimp.

I'd be rather angry too, I remember thinking "I'll bet they just ripped this off" when I saw that add. The Boosh lads have another 3 or 4 years tops worth of potential earnings from the shows and whilst I'm sure it won't be the last thing they'll do, defending their ideas (and earnings) is something they should be entitled to do.

It does tend to be irritating how blatant advertising companies can be in ripping off other peoples ideas.

About 2 or 3 different companies took the imaginary gun thing from Spaced.

And there was a Playstation advert that was a complete rip off of the nature documentary sections from Big Train.

they have every right to sue, the thing about the crimp is theat the lads dont want it to be overly commertial (sp??) notice how noel never crimps when he is a guest on a tv show! he doesnt want it to become a stupid fad which is exactly what it will become with this rediculous advert, more power to the lads, whats next, the honey monster gonna start turning his back on people?!

Wow, some serious ripping off going on there.

I know it must be a pain in the hole that advertisers have ripped off something from a show to pedal their wares, but can you copyright a style of singing?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

I would imagine you could argue that it's a trademark style

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,196 ✭✭✭Crumble Froo

well, they did ask where they could go with crimping. now they know.

I hope that if I ever bump into the Honey Monster, that I remember to keep a pistol hidden in my mustache goatee

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

One must always keep a pistol in their facial hair!

I find it kind of creepy how the box of sugar puffs also joins in.

Is this some new ability of the Honey Monster? Is it capable of possessing any items that bear it's likeness?

Yeah, that'd be like Lenny Kravitz trademarking jazz.

At the TCT gig that he hosted the other night, Noel told a little joke about putting a picture of your enemy on your shoe...then a few minutes later said he had a stone in his shoe, took off his chelsea boot and, yep you've guessed it, had a picture of the Sugar Puffs Monster on it! :P
Also they did the 'Sugar Monster no no' crimp at the BBC3 documentary thing. I highly doubt they'll sue, just take the piss at every available opportunity!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,820 ✭✭✭grames_bond

Also they did the 'Sugar Monster no no' crimp!!
