Anyone know if one of these would be easy enough to pick up somewhere?

My old iPod got most of it's play time in my car, and I want to do the same with my iPhone but the silly little recessed earphone socket means that the only set of earphones that'll fit in the device are the ones that came with it - so I can't currently connect it to my little tapey thing that I stick in my car's casette player :(

In the meantime, anyone also know if there'd be anything wrong (illegal, like) to use earphones in the car to listen to my music? I know you're not supposed to use earphones on a bicycle but I'm guessing its not a problem in a car?

Yep, they're available alright. Here's reviews on iLounge for 3 different models, but there's plenty available.

    2
    3

Should be able to find them on EBay.

actually one good thing to come out of the iphone being released here is now i don't have to buy in the states for little things like this.

my god ipod earphones seriously hurt my ears both physically and aurally.

    ..who?

Spectrum on grafton street used have them made by griffin for €12 - mine broke within a week and I didn't have the receipt :(

I went to buy another but they no longer have them in stock, and won't for another 2 weeks apparently:(

Bear in mind that all of these will reduce the functionality of the original headphones. You won't be able to answer the phone, pause music, skip tracks, etc. I got a thingy on ebay with the button that lets you do all of the above, bit long though

but you can't pause music/answer the phone/skip tracks with the regular earphones anyways.

this is a god send for me as i've been meaning to get back to using my shure e3g's as my ears are sore from using the ipod earphones as they were the only ones to fit the jack.

i don't use the microphone on the earphone as i think everyone looks a complete tool using them imo, i much prefer to have my phone to my ear whilst taking/making a call.

    errmm... who told you that?

    From the manual -
'Listen to music, videos, and phone calls. Use the built-in microphone to talk. Click the mic button to answer or end a call. When listening to iPod, click the button once to play or pause a song, or click twice quickly to skip to the next track'

Have to agree though, the supplied earphones are pretty crap and uncomfortable so I just trimmed a millimeter or so off the plastic part of the plug on my pair of great sounding Bose Triports so they fit in the iPhone socket.

None of those things seem to work on the earphones I got with mine. I wonder if they're faulty? I can speak ok through the mic (I was driving, so it was handy for hands-free!) but I couldn't answer the actual call by presssing it, I had to do that directly on the phone for some reason. And when music is playing, pressing it seems to have no effect :(
