So I got to do pictures for St Patricks day, .. I recently bought a canon 40d with a 17-85mm... Thinking of buying a 70-200... But I want to buy a good one, Not going to have it before Monday (parade)... what alternative do I have, shoot with the 17-85 and crop them? Im not to sure about buying a Sigma before then, If Im spending money on a lens, I want it to be the best... any suggestions, 85mm sould do for the moment wouldnt it? ... cheers

Last year I had my cheap-ass 70-200 on, and had to use it at both ends of the range - the 200mm was ideal to get faces to fill the frame from the sidelines, but I had to zoom out a lot as they came closer to me, or to get a bigger scene in. Using the longer focal length alos gave me shallower dof at f3.5-5.6 (as I said, crap lens) so i could blur the backgrounds better.

I think you might struggle to isolate details with the 17-85, even if you're right up in their faces. You'll prolly be stuck at 85 most of the time.

I may be wrong though :/

    I recently bought a canon 40d with a 17-85mm...

The 40d - eh... 10 megapixel right? Well with 10megapixel available to you in terms of image size from the 40d, you do have some scope to crop and still produce reasonable sized images in printed form so if the only option is the 17-85 and you find that at 85 you still aren't close enough to isolate or frame your subject, you will have room to manoeuvre in post processing in terms of removing unwanted space. Its no substitute for better glass but a little comfort if you run out of mm's.

Hope it goes well for you.

I was just about to ask which would be good at the parade sounds like my 75-300mm might be getting an outing and the 16-35mm staying at home

Think you are right there trish - parades are messy places(!) - lots going on. With your 75-300 you will have the ability to isolate an interesting subject or scene. Many parade scenes become just too busy at wider angles unless trying to catch panorama scene.
