Shipping 22ft Boat from USA to Ireland

    Hi everyone,

    Im very interested in buying a boat and have a fair enough idea of what one i want,

    i have looked around and found that if i buy this boat in ireland im looking at around 30k, if i buy the same boat in the uk im looking around 25k and if i buy in the usa im looking around 19k

    So its obviouos i could just drive over to england on a ferry, hitch it up and drive back home

    but with the usa id imagine id have to toe the boat to a shipping dock or something similar and have it shipped back

    does anyone know about doing this, any reccomendations on companys to use?

    Also what tax issues might i encounter?

    (boat would be on a trailer which would make it upyo 30ft in total)

    Consideration = 19,000
    Consideration + Duty @ 10% = 20,900
    Consideration + Duty @ 10% + VAT @ 21% = 25289

    It's a non-runner.

    There are companies that specialise in the Caribbean-Mediterranean market, but otherwise I suspect you are dealing with removing the keel* and mast and putting it in a container.

    * Boat dependent.

    That's not to say you can't buy it in the UK and take advantage of their reduced rate of VAT. Obviously there is no import duty when buying within the EU.

    Plus transport and insurance ~ 2500
    Plus transport and insurance + Duty @ 10% ~ 250
    Plus transport and insurance + Duty @ 10% + VAT @ 21% ~ 577 = 3327

    so if i bought in the uk i would have no other costs other than the ferry and the boat ?

    Huge minefield, but stay well away from American boats (aka "grey imports"). There is no second hand market for grey imports in Ireland. They are not built and fitted out to the same standard as EU market boats despite what the vendor is saying.

    Google "grey import boat" and you'll see what I mean.

    As for the UK:

    Second Hand Boats within the EU
    The key rule of buying a second hand boat anywhere in the EU is to ensure that is VAT compliant. There are two main categories in regard to VAT:
    1. Boats in use prior to 1985 and in EU waters on 31.12.1992. Such vessels are normally deemed to be EU VAT paid and a VAT liability will not arise as a result of a transfer of ownership within the EU.
    2. With any other vessel the vendor should be able to provide paperwork dating back to the original sale when new, proving the payment of VAT on the new vessel. Purchasers should be wary if no paperwork is available, particularly if the vessel has been owned by a company at any stage.

    New Boats within the EU

    1. New Vessels less than 7.5m in length
    These vessels will normally be VAT paid at point of purchase and no liability will arise on their importation into Ireland. If imported free of VAT than the VAT liability arises on their importation and a declaration must be made to the Revenue Commissioners
    2. New Vessels over 7.5m in length
    Such vessels must pay Irish VAT on their importation into Ireland.

    Vessels from Outside the EU
    New vessels from outside the EU must pay VAT on their importation into Ireland. They must also comply with the EU Recreational Craft Directive.

    The lads in Customs regularly check boats and contact owners to prove all paperwork in order.

    For the UK yes, but for the USA its this.

    I'm fairly sure Duty is payable too.

    ive just recieved my 22ft boat from the states and have saved a fortune
    if the dealers here would pass on the currency difference there would be no need but from my experience they are all too greedy
    with vat, duty and transport i reckon im still saving about 50% on the price of the same boat here
    any shipping agent will look after it, just look up the golden pages for shipping fowarders, but i used bob at www.bwsportboats.com in mountmellick and have to highly recommend his service
    he took care of every detail from picking it up to delivering it over here
    very professional
