Buying iphone in the US

Anyone got one of these from the US. Can it be bought online safely with no contract. How much does the cost wash out at. If i knew someone coming back from there could they just walk into a shop and buy one. Thanks for any replies. Think there should be a difinative guide for dummies:o loike me, loike lol.:confused:
