I want to get my boyfriends guitar repaired as a surprise for him, but I'm totally ignorant when it comes to guitars.
I did hear him say it was something to do with the frets?? It's an acoustic guitar.

Anyway, can anyone point me towards somewhere in Dublin that's not gonng rip little old me off?

'Perfect Pitch' on Exchequer St. (just up from Tower Records on Wicklow St.) do a lot of work with acoustics. Depending on what's wrong with the guitar, the price will vary. If "it's the frets", it might just be intonation, in which case they should be able to help you out. If it's something else, like a badly dented few frets... Well, I don't know :)

Either way, they'll advise you anyway. They are, in my experience, generally a nice bunch of people in there. The other place you can try is 'Musician Inc.' which is about 20 seconds walk away, just up past the "back" entrance (non George's St. side) to George's St. Arcade. I've used them for guitar servicing before and they've always been good.

Then there's 'Walton's' on George's St. and 'Music Maker' about 3 shops up from 'Perfect Pitch'. They would be my last 2 choices, however.

Whoever you go with, ask them to do a general service and replace the strings at the same time. And tell them to use the same gauge strings as the ones that are on it currently! Good luck :)

It depends on the severity of the problem but it could end up costing more than you expect.

Regardless, I'd advise against bringing it into any of the music shops here for repair. Most if not all don't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to setting up or fixing guitars.

Give Derrick Nelson (Danvel Guitars) a call.

He'll have a look at it, tell you whats up and how much it should cost. Nice chap and well recommended around these here parts. ;)

He's out in Marlay Park btw.

The above is definitely true if the guitar is actually broken. If it just needs a service and a clean up, then the shops should suffice.

And then, of course, we'll have to...*cough*... take our cut of the price as well... ;)

Repair or "service" aka setup, I would not trust any of these shops with my instruments. Most likely they would come back worse which has happened before.

Well, fair enough if that's your opinion. I myself would trust them for a simple service, but each to his own.

Completely agree, he's very nice, very honest, and very good at what he does. He's also very understanding and helpful if you don't know much about guitars. Word of warning though he's a busy man I had to wait two weeks just to get to see him, but that should probably be taken as a good sign.

How about in the Galway area? Someone to TRUST with a couple of VERY nice handbuilt instruments. One doesn't need much - just a check, the other needs a little adjustment, and I've read that the truss rod is unusual so it needs to be done by someone competent or smart enough to contact either the builder or the place where it was bought - both in the US.

    Thanks!
