    Hey folks

I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about markets stalls....

How do you get a place in a market?

How do you get the actual physical stall?

Is it worth the time and effort ie can you make a living from it?

I have a few more but I'll start with those ones

    thanks paddy

    Hey Paddy,

My ex girlfriend dabbled in this a couple of years back, she made / sold jewelery. From what I can remember she did ok from it, I know 2 places that she used to operate in were the Mad Cow Market on the Naas Rd (near Red Cow pub) and a market in Blackrock. A lot of the time she made a profit, sometimes a loss but in general she did well enough. The main downside she found was that it takes 2 ppl to man the stall, for toilet breaks etc the stall can't be idle... so this will further reduce your profits as you'll have to pay the 2nd person.

I think the stalls cost her about €60 for the day, but I'm not 100%

Google the 2 Dublin markets I mentioned, I'm sure you'll be able to find more info and hopefully get you started.

I suppose it depends on what type of merchandise you would be looking to sell.

If you were selling food/fresh produce then there are markets in Temple Bar & Malahide every Saturday. There's also markets in Howth though how often it's on I'm not sure.

Then again if you are selling food/fresh produce there will probably be health and hygiene regulations for you to comply with.

I think that you need a trade permit/licence to sell in market so I suppose it might be an idea to talk to DCC

In my student days i had a stall in Blackrock market and St. Annes market (near the Guinness museum). You just had to ring up the organisers and book a stall. The table was provided.

As a newbie you will be given the least favourable stalls (i.e. at the back of the market). Then i think you can arrange to get more favourable positions as you stay there longer.

What we did was went out to some toy wholesaler on the Naas road and bought a few hundred teddy bears. We were able to sell enough of them, but there wasn't great money out of it.

If i was doing it now i'd go to alibaba.com and order some electronics and household items from chinese factories and sell these. I'd say you'd get a greater mark-up and greater sales from this, because you are selling something that people want.

    chinavasion looks good as well.

have ordered through alibaba before (circa 2,000 portable keyring phone chargers) , but there is a risk of getting too many emails from over-eager potential suppliers, all written in bad english

thankyou for the replies... I was under the opinion that you just rang the organiser and got a stall and didnt need to contact the DCC... although I have no problems doing that if need be

I have been on alibaba alright but i must look up the chinavasion one now...

Can I ask I plan to bring in from asia tshirts, old retro ones movie ones and old 80's cartoon ones... I am assuming that customs will contact me and I have to pay a percentage of the base price of these items... Is there a set percentage for customs.....

I am buying these off a supplier/wholesaler so is there anything i need to be concerned with in terms of licensing laws or anything like that

dont wanna bring in a load of it and fing myself in hot water

thanks again for all the help lads/ladies

    Hey Paddy,

not too sure about the taxation on imports, i'm guessing that if you are required to pay a percentage to the government then you would need to register a business (for VAT etc)
to be fair though i have very little experience in this so I don't want to point you in the wrong direction :(

must say i like the idea of the retro tshirts, if you get some stock in then let me know (my brother got some really nice transformer and dangermouse ones at the stalls in London lol, and a helluva lot cheaper then forbidden planet!!! (great shop but very expensive))

Best of luck and let's know how you get on
