According to this (unless it's an April's fools joke) Nokia are to release the N810 which will have Wimax capability.
Admittedly the functionality will be redundant here (for the next while anyway) but still it's an interesting insight into how mobile telephony may develop over the next couple of years.
Some say 3g/HSDPA isn't all it's cracked up to be- wonder if this technology will be any better..

I suppose you would be able to use that phone to connect to your ripwave from Irish Broadband?

Clearwire use Wimax as far as I understand but I haven't tried the service - I'm guessing the coverage issue will be the limiting factor in Ireland and I think it's going to have a hard time competing with HSDPA phones with wi-fi.

IN the U.S. it could be a different matter - Clearwire has been quite aggressive building out its network there and there are other players too.

3G signals have some difficulty travelling indoors, perhaps WiMax would alieviate this? Or perhaps not, because they would be working from a frequency range. Then there's the issue of small cell sizes (more base stations) which will affect both technologies.

The Europeans hit base with 2G/GSM, but it will be interesting to see if the Americans can come up with a better 3G offering.
