If you swap the standard PS3 HDD out do you have to replace it with one thats 2.5 inch? Or will 3.5 work fine? And can it boot off an external HDD?

You need a 2.5inch SATA harddrive. It will only boot off the internal hard disc. However, it will read media from external drives.

you could replace the internal one with any SATA drive - but there is physically only space for a 2.5" drive in it. You could technically leave a 3.5" hanging out the side of your ps3 if you wanted to do that for some reason. The 2.5" drives have plenty of storage space these days anyway - no big disadvantage to them anymore.

You can't connect 3.5" drive unless you have external power supply to run it.

2.5" are up to 500GB now just get one,

also only get 5k rpm not 7k as they cost way more and you will have no increase in speed on a ps3

yep on pretty much everything above. get a decent sized 5400rpm 2.5" sata drive and if you want more storage get an external USB one. one thing worth mentioning tho, is that it will only read from fat32 formatted disks, not ntfs ones. just something to watch out for.

    (going by GoogleNews)
Best bet would be the Samsung Spinpoint M6 -- it's 9.5mm height unlike the Fujitsu/Hitachi drives so should definitely fit.

Price is around $300 so dunno what it'll be when it shows up on Dabs/Komplett...

ahh just got the tone of his post that there were already available.

i don't trust samsung 2.5 drives ever since i bought a 250gig one and took 24 hours to install mac OS X.

get it from Komplett, had to return stuff to them and but they were great and as hdd are very sensitive, so getting it from them or a shop(the offline kind) is you best bet.

i dislike buying off komplett, the complete rip off for dhl delivery is absurd.

i've also had horrors of GLS leaving my macbook in a neighbours tree house  and if i use an post some fecker in galway will receive a hard drive.

i have a 250gig i want to put into my ps3 but i want to get a 500gig for my laptop and just thought they were out by the way you were talking in your previous post.
