As far as I know, it's pretty easy to implement sharepoint, and it's normally something one of the IT people would do.

A business analyst or developer would be a much better career choice IMO.

Thanks dulindude, its for a friend and not myself. Your right he does work in an IT department here in the university. He is trying to switch to a Analyst/Developer within the university though.

    Hi Folks,

There's a difference between implementing, i.e. installing sharepoint and developing for Sharepoint.

Sharepoint is a pretty extensible and powerful framework and there are positions out there for people who can implement it correctly and who can develop what are called webparts on top of the basic Sharepoint framework. Webparts are essentially plugins for sharepoint sites that extend the functionality, from simple things like displaying in XML weather\news feeds all the way up to complex document and process workflow systems etc.

I would recommend not specialising in Sharepoint development and absolutely going down the Analyst \ Developer route, you(they)'ll gain a much broader level of experience and if necessary can jump sideways at any point into a bit of sharepoint development.

I'll probably get panned for saying that by all the Sharepoint developers out there now ;-)

    R.

There are alot of people making alot of money being specific Sharepoint related IT people.

I look after Sharepoint in my company but its not the only thing I do. I inherited a badly installed and badly configured setup and the company as a whole has been suffering with it.

Some people i know work for a company that all they do is look after Sharepoint. They develop add ons and go out to companies and set it up excellently. And after seeing some of their work I can say that I would rather they would set it up then another IT person put together some half assed installation.

Sharepoint Deevelopment is quite a lucrative prospect at the moment.

Linked with .net development and windows workflow there is plenty of work out there.

Installing Sharepoint 2007 isnt that bad, whereas configuring it for use for the general public is a bigger job and requires a lot of skills. Things like setting up like Enterprise Search, the whole BPI stuff and designing workflows in SPS Designer are big business.

I work with a lot of Sharepoint implementations at the moment. Just talking to 3 guys here we are all working in MOSS and havent crossed paths yet in the technology parts we are doing. They are doing a lot of Wepart stuff, I am doing custom workflow stuff..

Implementation including configuring for use, is a seperate discipline and also quite worthwhile. Money is really in the development and extension aspect
