Eery sirens in Dublin Bay late 70s or so

A sound I heard today (construction lorry) vaguely reminded me of the
sound of sirens not unlike WWII air raid sirens which I used to hear
now and again when I was quite young and living in both Sutton and
Clontarf areas of North Dublin. This would have been late 70s or
early 80s but more likely late 70s.

Can anyone else of my vintage (I'm 42) remember them.
I found them really spooky and, because of my vivid imagination and my
interest at the time in war movies/comics I had almost convinced
myself that an air raid was under way anytime I heard them ! :)
I think I remember asking my dad about them and he figured they
were related to fire drills or similar within the north wall area.
Anyone else remember those sirens ?!

I also remember cirqa 1971-73 at some point in time waking up
in the middle of the night when one of the petroleum containers
in the north wall or docklands had exploded and apparently some
kids who lived in Baldoyle or nearer the coast had fallen out of
bed with the intensity of the explosion. Can anyone recall that
incident. I was only a very young school boy at that point.

There were sirens going off in howth in the 1970's as a warning that there was blasting going on.This happened when they were building the new harbour and it went on for ages.It certainly would've been audible in sutton and clontarf. There was an explosion on the docks when i was a kid and a cameraman was apparantly killed too.YOu could hear the gas cylenders exploding throughout the day!

Interesting Degsy. I didn't realise someone was killed in that explosion.
I must ask my Dad about it as he may remember the incident more
    vividly.
