Just bought nokia 6500 classic, when writing a text message i see that there are 1000 characters available. On my last phone, only 160 were available. Obviously i know that mms messages can take 1000 characters of text so does that mean i'm being charged for a mms msg each time? Or does the phone "know" that less than 160 is an sms msg?

There doesn't seem to be any setting to alter the default and it doesn't actually ask, just offers the 1000 character template. I'm on vodafone if that makes any difference.

Apologies if this has been done before, i have searched but no luck.

    Thanks to all.

That's perfectly normal, you are indeed sending SMS messages. An SMS has a limit of 160 characters, but they can be tied together one after another and sent as one long message of up to 1000 characters. For ever 160 characters you're charged the price of one text, or if you only slightly go over you'll still be charged for an extra text.
E.G. 170 characters is two texts worth.

SE phones have a setting from which you can turn on long messages or turn them off (i.e. limit to 160 characters).

Menu -> Messaging -> Settings -> Text Message -> Max. msg length. Then select either "Max. available" or "Fit into one msg".

Nokia phone should have something simliar I think.

Thanks for that Laoisfan, cant find it tbh, but i'll keep looking. I've seen that on SE's, that's why i was looking in the first place, but if i'm only being charged for sms msgs then there's no hassle anyway.

    Thanks mate
