The King of Kong: a fistful of quarters

OK So I checked the 3 page history of the film forum and havent found any threads yet on this movie. Is this because its old hat? Has it got an Irish release yet? I just saw it last weekend here in Melbourne, and I have to say its one of the most sharply framed and plot oriented documentaries I have ever seen. Its an offbeat look at the über nerd culture surrounding classic gaming, particularly. of course, Donkey Kong, and a good vs. evil battle between the reigning world champ Billy Mitchell vs. an unemployed newcomer, Steve Wiebe in both their endeavours to set a new Donkey Kong world record. I read a lot of the commotion about it over on the AV club, including interviews, claims, counter claims, and it seems that it is quite contraversial in terms of just how selective some of the editting is in the movie, in terms of storyline vs. reality, but for me, it was editted to perfection for laugh after laugh.
However, when leaving the cinema, you will be struck with this ambivolent strange urge, to both never set foot in an arcade again and wanting to play Donkey Kong in a smokey bar for hours and hours.
It was a completely enduring film though and one I highly recommend. Simply one of the best documentaries I have seen in recent years.
    Two bollocko's up.
So yeah. Have I already missed the boat on the King of Kong discussion?

Pretty much, yeah! There was a thread on this 2-3 weeks ago (Possibly in Film Review?). Anywho, I've heard nothing but good things about this documentary and I've been meaning to see it for ages, I'm big into the whole retro gaming shìte and it's been years since I've seen a well-compiled documentary. I'll treat myself to it tonight, it'll give me a reason to drink the rest of my beer. :p

I dont think it has been given an irish release date. I watched a promo for it a few weeks ago, it looks incredibly nerdy. Im give it a watch when it comes out on dvd.

Yeah watched a couple of days ago it was excellent stuff, yer man Billy Mitchell is some wankstain and as for his gloriously nerdy "disciples" especially the fool on the phone telling him how Steve Wiebe was doing.

Saw this recently. Biggest good vs evil battle since time began!! :p

Even thinking about Billy Mitchell now gets my blood boiling!
With his constant double standards and his stupid chronies?!?!? My god!

    Brilliant documentary.

I read an interview with Billy Mitchell and he claims that they editted him poorly, to make him look worse. In one particular scene, the one where he finally shows up with Steve as Steve is playing Donkey Kong, Steve says hi, and then they cut to Billy walking away saying "Some people, you dont want to spend much time talking to." Billy claims they edited out his greeting to Steve, and when I saw it, its true, the camera did cut, but I dont know if that's conclusive.
Also, Just googling around a little and I found this.

So Billy Mitchell, the evil hellian, reclaimed his DK champ title.
    Bastard!

Bound to happen. He only beat it by like a thousand or so and all. And if you go to the twingalaxies homepage, the last time it was updated newswise, or at least the top story, is still the Steve Wiebe top score. What in the hell is that about?

Well, I saw it last night. Started off incredibly nerdy but then I was completely hooked on it as something starting out so miniscule turned out to be an epic fight between good & evil. I couldn't stand Billy's disciples and this whole empire that was built around him, protecting the status and legend of him.

Absolutely quality documentary that ended brilliantly.

I frickin' know. Its one of those docos that just hangs around for a while in your subconscious. I just thoroughly enjoyed it and have since gotten to level 4 in the original DK on my emulator.

Am I bumping my own thread discreetly enough that nobody else is noticing either?
