Anybody have info on the Qualified Lawyer Transfer Test aka QLTT? I am registered to take it in the summer and would like feedback on the difficulty, study materials, pass rate, etc.

    Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

I am also planning on taking the exam this summer. I have had a very difficult time getting information. If you do not have the past exam questions from the law society that is where you need to start. You can order for €30. You should also download the syllabus and I have just been using general legal text books to try and cover the topics in the syllabus and also that I have noticed are repeated. In some areas of law, it is clear what kinds of areas they are focused on. In other, such as EU law, more difficult. Not much help from the Law Society and dependent on who you talk to FE1 prep may or may not help.

What is the purpose of this test may i ask?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 cailindearg

This is the qualified legal transfer test. It is for people who are qualified to practice law in other jurisdictions who are seeking to get a licence to practice law in Ireland. I, for example, am qualified to practice law in Washington DC, Arkansas, and New York (USA) but want to obtain my Solicitors Licence in Ireland.;)

Ah thanks. I assumed it was something like that. Is it a difficult thing to do? And also, regarding vice versa, to obtain a licence to practice in the USA being a qualified Irish solicitor, how does one go about to that? And again, is it difficult?

    Thanks!

To be honest, I am not sure. I think that there are certain states (California, Pennsylvanie and New York) that have reciprocity agreements with Ireland and you may be able to waive into those States if you have practiced over a certain number of years. I am not sure. I got my education and training in the States, but was born and grew up in Ireland, so i am not sure on that. You could log on to the American Bar Association web site or any of the State Bar Assocaition web sites and see what the requirements are for out of US attorneys to qualify. Hope this helps.

I have taken several of the QLTTs. The best (and cheapest) way to approach the exams is to study the materials using the exam questions as a guide. The materials can be picked up from various sources including on-line or if you are in Dublin, there are a couple of book stores just up from Trinity that stock most of the materials.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 cailindearg

Geroid. What did you do about the solicitors accounts section? I got a text book from England but I wish there was a way to check my answers against the questions in the book for clarity. How did you find the sections you took? Was it difficult? I feel overwhelmed at the moment? What material were you talking about? Have you taken the Taxation section and what portions of the statuts did you use? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I am scheduld to take all sections (except Criminal Law which I got exempted from ) in June. Am I nuts? Thanks for the info...

Hi, sorry I can't help you on the Solicitor Accounts. I wouldn't know where to begin to obtain materials. Please let me know what you find out. The materials I am referring to are the recommended readings on the Law Soc web site. You can get most if not all of the recommended materials in Dublin at either of the two book stores that sell (very expensive) law books. Also, the government book store has any statute books you need. If you haven't already obtained the Law Soc published exam questions, you really need to. Go through them and answer the questions using the recommended readings. Mind you, consider that I have only taken the easy subjects so far- EU Law and Con Law. Good luck. Ger

Ger, What do you mean the easy ones? Where did you get your law degree? on the statutes for CAT, Stamp Duty and VAT, did you just get the most updated amendments of each. The book store at NUIG said it would be a box full if I were to get all of them. Is the Govt book store near trinity also? I will be in Dublin next week to get all that stuff. When did you take exams? Nov 2007? If so, do you recall any of the specific issues on either of the subjects you took since that exam is not part of the book and they seem to repeat some of the same issues over again? Thanks for all the info. If it would be easier, you could just email me at my email address at cailindearg at yahoo dot com. Thanks again.
    Stephanie

    Also,
Please let me know of any issues you recall. I haven't found any book on Tax.
    THanks

Most of the materials are available at Hodges Figgis on Dawson St (I think) including the Tax materials. Also the government sells publications at a store front on Molesworth St (just around the corner). Like I said, I only sat Con Law and EU Law. The best way to study I found was to practice write answers to the prior exams.

I'm planning to sit the Irish QLTT. Probably not until November now. I heard the Tax summry is useful for the tax paper. I was planning to ask some of the FE 1 Tutors to do a course.

As far as I'm aware you can sit California & Washington state if you are an Irish Sol and NY if you have a law degree.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 cailindearg

I have downloaded a lot of the tax sections from the revenue website which has been helpful. I have heard from some sources that the FE 1 is somewhat like and for others, not al all alike. There used to be acourse offered at Griffith College, but not any more. I have been working from the questions contained in the old exams as a guide. It is the only real guidance available, other than the syllabus that is offered by the Law society. I got my qualification in the States and am licenced in Washington D.C., New York and Arkansas. Best of luck with the studies.

Guys, be careful where you put your email address. I edited your post, cailindearg, to remove some of the risk of phishing. I've got one email account (that I have to keep using) that gets attacked 20+ times a day from just one time where I foolishly posted it.

I keep on emailing them back to say it's big enough already, but they won't stop.

I think I have enough materials to study for the June exams. Does anybody have any input on the oral professional conduct exam?????

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2 Willo the Wisp

I emailed independent colleges and they got back saying they were looking at the possibility of putting together a course for the QLTT.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 cailindearg

The guy who started Independent College, Phillip Burke, used to teach the QLTT course at Griffith College. He said they discontinued the course (when I spoke to him some months ago) and I anticipated that he would probably offer a course. Not sure it will be any good for those of us taking exam in June. On the oral exam, you can buy a book from the law society that has the rules, though i would love to know from anyone who actually took the exam how intensive it is, or what the format is.

    Hi Geroid,

I am planning on taking the QLTT in November, just as to the above post you said you have taken the easier subjects so far so does that mean you can take a few exams at a time and do not have to take them all at once?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 cailindearg

Okay. I spent the day walking Dublin. As far as Solicitors Accounts portion of the test, the best option I have found is to get a text book called Solicitors Accounts (a practical guide) published by Oxford Press. It is English based but gives examples on how to do Balance Sheet and all accounting stuff. You can also go to the govt. web site and download statute SI 421 of 2001 - which is the Solicitors Rules themselves. Between these two, I think you should be in okay shape for the portion of the exam. If you go to the Govt. documents stores and just ask what they have on Solicitors accounts they will tell you nothing, but if you give them the Statute number they may have it. Like I say, you can also download it from the Irish Statute Bood website,or copy in the law library at the Law Society. For anyone who has the previous exam questions that were printed prior to January, they now have the upadated book with the November exam, however, you cannot just get the November exam, you have to buy the entire book. There is also a book store at the four courts that has most of the texts you might need. Hope this info is helpful to anyone who needs it.:)

    Comprehensive Irish QLTT materials available

Comprehensive set of QLTT materials available in Dublin.

I have completed all the QLTT exams in the Law Society and have a pretty comprehensive set of notes, solutions, texts, past papers and legislation on all topics which I am willing to sell to others sitting the exam.

My notes include the following -

    - A comprehensive summary on each of the relevant topics in Criminal,Land,Tort,Contract,EU Law,Constitutional and Probate and Tax.

    - solutions done out to the recurrant questions in several of the exams.

    - complete package for the solicitors accounts exam (which was very troublesome to assemble) which includes solutions to each of the questions, which are the same each year.

    - the Guide to professional ethics which I used to pass the conduct oral exam.

    - The relevant legislation on Tax together with the Revenues guides as well as the Succession Act 1965 and Mongeys “Probate in a nutshell”.

    - A complete set of past papers

    The cost is €300

This is not an official Law Society compilation but my own, however I passed all 6 exams I sat without difficulty using these materials in November and am very confident I passed my remaining two (Probate/Tax and Solicitors Accounts) which I sat last month.
I received my Cert of Eligibility following qualifying in New York in 2007.

Any interested parties send an email to cormboy@hotmail.com

    Hi,

I have the materials from BPP and have taken their assured pack. Which gives all the material necessary for passing the exam. I have passed the Common Law exam with an A grade. I am attempting the rest of the three papers this September. In September I'll be willing to sell all these materials for a reasonable price.

I can also provide some tips on taking the exam.
You can email me at nudratpiracha@gmail.com

My adivce for all those NY "Qualified lawyers" out there is to pass the QLTT quickly, because with a bit of luck our Law Society (as they usually do) will follow their counterparts in England and Wales, who will from the 1st September close the loophole of being able to qualify as a solicitor without any practical experience. From that date 2 years experience will be required.

Could never understand how knowing New York Real Property law or any other state or federal law for that matter, in any way helps somebody from practising in this jurisdiction. Particularly as most Irish who qualify there will do so having never actually met a client before (unless of course qualified here first and no your friends and family asking you for advice in the pub doesn't count!!) or having actually ever practised law (that work experience between 2nd & 3rd yr in your uncles firm, or multiple choice questions and essays don't count!!).
