I have completly failed to work out how to select an operator manualy on my n95. The help says to go to tools->settings->phone->network->operator selection. But operator selection is missing from the menu! I am with 3 but the phone was bought sim free from the uk I'm so I don't think it's operator custom firmware muppitry.
    Anyone know what's going on?

Whats available when you choose Tools-Settings-Phone-Network?

I bought mine in the UK last year sim-free too. But mine was branded - 'operator custom firmware muppitry'
Sounds like yours is too. I found a program to change the product code to a non-branded phone, then updated the firmware from the Nokia website. Firmware updates are sometimes months ahead of the custom firmwares. (Currently using V.20.0.015)

I'm showing 3 options on that screen - your two and Operator Selection.

I got as N95 last night, V 11.0.026, and it has the option to manually select the network.

Not branded, I've updated the firmware a couple of times using the standard updater. Might try changing it to the euro firmware when I get home I know the uk one is different.
