Problem with chat in Gmail

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum but it seemed to fit here.

My wife has a Gmail account and uses the chat feature that is on the left hand side of the screen. For the past two days the chat has been disabled. The message being displayed is "You have been signed out of Gmail. You must log back in to enable Chat".

Now she is logged in, obviously as she can see this message. There is no buttons to re-enable chat. My own Gmail account is unaffected.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

I have just gotten a similar problem.
I have recently started getting a "Secure Connection Failed" message on certain sites even ones I know to be secure such as gmail.
I cannot sign into chat and have the following message:
    "Chat is disabled. ♫
    Set status here
    cleardot.gif
Your internet connection is experiencing problems or your network administrator has blocked Gmail chat."
Have NTL/UPC 20mb. I tried the cookie deleting thing with no joy.
    Any ideas?

    https://www.gmail.com is the secure site
http://www.gmail.com is not... which do you use ? could try using the other one :)

though gmail was changed a few months ago so that after you log in all pages are encrypted.
