Indoor freeview aerial?

    Hi all,

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

I bought an indoor aerial today (one for all, model sv 9141 on this page - http://www.oneforall.lt/oycbylxcbulf.html?pag=39&prodsubgroepnr=46)
for my lcd but when I plugged in and tried tuning in the stations, it'd only pick up rte1, and very poorly at that. I tried different positions but there was little improvement.
The sales woman (in curry's) tried pushing the 9151 on me but I refused as I thought she was just trying to push the more expensive item but I'm having second thoughts now! Her arguement was that someone had told her it was better, but I wasn't convinced at the time.

    Anyone any suggestions?

What channels can I expect to get with freeview anyway - anything beyond the 4 basic Irish channels?

The Telecam Indoor aerial is regarded by some as being the most effective indoor aerial - see http://www.ricability-digitaltv.org.uk/pages/test-reports/indoor-aerials/recommendations/best-indoor-aerials.htm
It also all depends on what your signal is in the first place. Most people require an outdoor/loft aerial to pick up DTT both in UK and ROI. The signal needs to be pretty good in first place . Where are you picking your signals from? Are you hoping to pick up DTT from the ROI and Freeview from N.Ireland or even Wales? What is your location? DTT from ROI includes AFAIK a number of radio stations as well as 4 basic Irish channels.

You wont get Freeview with an indoor aerial. Freeview is the DTT service in the UK.

I'm in north Mayo - we don't have a roof aerial, parents have sky installed but I only want the basic channels, don't really watch much tv.

The satellite dish is installed just outside my bedroom window, so I was hoping it would help with the reception:o

I think I saw telecam in curry's - they definitely had that flat one-for-all aerial

Satellite dish definitely will not help with receiving DTT! It 'does what it says on the tin' i.e. receives satellite and not terrestial signals. You probably need a pretty good outside or loft aerial to pick up Irish DTT as test signals AFAIK are on much lower power than their analogue equivalents. As has been pointed out Freeview is UK version of DTT and from your location it would suggest this would be well nigh impossible to pick up except you live on high ground and use a very high gain amplified outside aerial.

No hope of Irish DTT in North Mayo either.

The UK freeview is barely receivable in Bundoran right now, I think coming from Broughter Hill. It seems all the available channels can be tuned, but it's barely watchable with the antenna I tested it with. Maybe with a big 48 yagi, it might be better, probably less chance of getting it in north Mayo, at least until it goes full power (in 2012, IIRC).

Would any of those indoor aerials be able to pick up the basic irish channels then - with a good reception?!
