Legality of unlocking and debranding mobiles

Just a question on the legalities of debranding and unlocking a mobile.

Say I buy a vodafone RTG mobile and port a number over to VF. I receive my phone that is branded with VF software and is locked to their network. I then go home and remove their sim lock and debrand the phone. The next day I port the number to a different network and I proceed to use the phone there.

Can Vodafone do anything about this?

no, there's nothing illegal about it.

Nothing illegal I would have thought. Its possible there is something in the T&C that covers that point, perhaps giving them a cause of action.

I'd imagine you've broken a contractual agreement between yourself and the provider. However, I've never heard of them prosecuting anybody (civil case; I sincerely doubt it'd be a criminal offence) for it and cannot imagine that it would be worth the time, effort or money to do so.
