Hello All !! , I am a new member to this site witch so far I think is great. I am trying to find out how to go about obtaining a Firearms liscence. I used to be an avid shooter up untill about 12 years ago (not in Ireland though). I have asked in a couple of gun/sporting shops but have been met with blank stares and suspision. I have even asked a couple of Guards that I happen to know (my sister is married to one!).They said that they did'nt know. Any help would be great. I am looking for a .22 Lr, something like a Walther G22. It looks like a fun but good gun, that is cheap to opperate and accurate. I live in Co. Wicklow, i know that there is a club just down the road from me but feel foolish to go in and ask them.Again, any help would be great.!!!!:)

The old advice is the best advice - join the local club. You might feel like you'd feel foolish - they'd feel a lot more foolish if they didn't welcome new members though. See if they have any club gear you can use while you figure out what you want (either Rew or Rovi has a G22, they'd be the ones to ask about it, but I don't hear great things about it in terms of accuracy). Then just wander to the local station, fill in the form and apply for your cert and away you go. Read this for more details.

They do indeed. They have a few members on these boards as well, and I'm sure one of them would be happy to give you the information.

mmm, my experience with Hilltop was very bad, and I'm a very experienced shooter. I dropped in to make some enquiries and found "Mr. Beardy" very unhelpful, it just seemed he couldn't be bothered. Now I'm a member of the midlands and can't speak highly enough of the place and the experience I've had of other clubs was always good.

To the OP, sure join a club and I've found most gun dealers very helpful and glad to offer advice and have a chat.

Don't forget that there is also a club in Roundwood The East Coast Shooting Club. This is a members club, not a commercial business and you would be most welcome to drop in any Sunday morning to meet the people and see the facilities.
    Club website is here http://www.eastcoastshootingclub.com/
    Club location is here http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http:%2F%2Fwww.mcdermottroe.com%2Fshooting%2Fclubs%2Flocations%2FAll.kmz&z=7

    That'd be me.
I posted about mine fairly recently, post #16 in this thread- Walther G22.

I also used it to illustrate a rant over here.

I think all of what I said in the above still stands: it's great gas, it's fussy about ammo, it's most certainly not 'accurate' (at least by comparison with a middling decent bolt action), everyone loves firing it.
Unfortunately, what I said in the rant still stands too: it's black, it's short, it's a bullpup.
In short, it's eeevil, and (we're lead to believe by those who know best) is a certain route to the dark side and eternal damnation for anyone foolish enough to succumb to its siren call.

I'll let everyone know how re-licensing it goes later in the year, but I suspect that going looking to newly license one now might well be an exercise in frustration and negativity.
I'd love to be proven wrong though. ;)

    @ fathersymes:
I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience at Hilltop; my personal experiences there have been nothing but positive.
