Driving Nice to Dover - nice place (city/village) for overnight stopover?

    We are going by car to the south of France in June (Provence/Nice).

    We have just more or less finished the (rough) Itenary, and we decided that it would be better to split the long drive back (1200 km) by making an overnight stop somewhere along the way. Looking at Google Maps we will probably drive the motorway Nice-Avignon-Lyon-Dijon-Reims-Calais.

    We will leave Nice early morning of Thursday , would ideally drive till lunch, then get off the motorway to find a nice place (i.e. Village, City etc.), spend the rest of the day and the night there and then leave again the next day around lunch, as our ferry leaves around 10 pm friday night.

    Any suggestions for any nice places to stop?

    Lyon woulod be my recommendation. Have friend in Dijon so i hope to get there soon because i heard it is great but haven't been before.

    Lots of stuff going on in Lyon and much cheaper than Nice.
