Missing HD Space...

    Anyone come across this one?

I was running Boot Camp Assistant to partition the hard drive on my Mac Book Pro... unfortunately the system crashed while this was working away and insisted I restart.

When I started back up my hard drive space had dropped from 75GB down to 45GB without a partition in sight. I've checked the file sizes on every folder on the hard drive and it comes to a total of 31GB of used space. So I seem to have lost about 30GB to limbo.

Will I have to reformat to get the space back or is there anything else I can try?

This happened me on someone else's machine before. It turned out to be a false alarm, the space was still there and accessible, it just didn't register for a while. It took a lot of restarts and disk util checking but it eventually showed up. Its an odd one, never really did figure out why at the time.

Repairing permissions with Disk utility right now.

I thought it was hanging at first but it seemed to finally take off.

It's been repairing permissions for about 20 minutes now with no end in sight.

All the issues appear to be within 'Applications Support'

Keeps failing to perform the Verify Disk option...

    But it does say:

    Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 19960593 instead of 11678117)

So at least I know I'm not imagining things.

Well I got my missing space back... but I had to do a complete reformat of the hard drive.

I'd forgotten they didn't give me a 10.5 installer disc with the thing... had to install 10.4 before putting in the 10.5 update disc that came with it... took almost 3 hours over all.

happened to me, just required a repair disk (booting from OS X disk and running Disk Utility on the drive), space all freed up and OS X partition remained intact
