Postage Costs

Are postage costs a free for all on ebay?

I ordered a hedge trimmer for someone and it came to £74 or thereabouts.
I got an email a few minutes later (via ebay) from the seller to say that the postage will be £15 extra as I don't live on the British Mainland, on top of the £15 I already paid.

As I live in Northern Ireland, the Royal Mail do not charge extra even if the post is coming across the Irish Sea. It is really infuriating that its technically the same country but the cost of postage doubles!!

    Pretty much.

Did you question the P&P? It could be a genuine mistake/misunderstanding. The post office or RM's website could have confused him/her into thinking they need to opt for another method or something.

you should really question the extra charge. They probably saw Ireland on the address and assumed it would cost them more to ship. Remind them that you are part of the UK.

Postage cost should be clearly stated in the auction. If it doesn't list your country u should email to find out the price but if it's already listed as cost to wherever for whatever that's the price u pay, they can't just suddenly add on more money if they've already stated that it costs x amount.

If the seller listed postage to your location (UK) in the auction and now wants more then you don't actually have to pay it. However, you can't force the seller to sell to you either. You can leave negative feedback, report him to eBay and start a Paypal dispute for trying to change postal rates after the auction.

You should first bring it to his attention that post to NI is the same as the rest of the UK mainland and see what he says. If he still wants the extra, do as I say above.

It turns out that the item arrived by courier, not Royal Mail.

A very expensive way to work, me thinks.
