Nokia PC suite and 6230i bluetooth

Not sure if this should be in computer forum but here goes. I can connect my 6230i to latest version of nokia PC suite on XPSP2 via bluetooth and can perform most functions available. I gave up on "one touch access" and found a workaround which allows my phone connect to the wireless G network by creating a dialup connection with *99# as the phone number. But, although I am connected, and the phone has the G icon with the square around it, I cannot collect mail or connect to the internet. I set my connection on the PC to "never dial a connection" and it should therefore use any available port, as it does for my broadband connection. It must be something simple I am missing to allow me connect to the net. Can anyone enlighten me.
