Just looking for some advice regarding my 03 Audi A4 Air con unit. called to see my mechanic today after hearing a rattling from under bonnet, turns out it was the air con unit. Now he wasnt sure if it was gone, he thought it may just need to be refilled, the air con still works, its on most of the time in my at very low setting. When i turn it up to full blast the noise from the engine stops and starts again when i turn off the air con. Just wondering has anyone any experience of this? If i knew it was broke i wouldnt waste money refilling it and just get a whole new unit altogether

anybody know where i could get a unit without costing the earth??

To be honest, your post isn't very helpful.
You can get refill kits in Halfords from about €30. Replacing the unit is big bucks

    Call John Kenealy, 087 2559706. He's a mobile a/c specialist, I find him good & cheap.

it sounds like (from your discription) an issue with the clutch assembly on the compressor. i assume this is what u mean when u say air con "unit" is "gone"!

filling, or re-filling with refridgerant will not solve your problem. Did you pop by the garage looking for a free 1 second diagnosis, or did u book it in with a garage??? They will most likley have to remove all the gas and oil from your a/c system, remove the compresser and examin it. This would have givin a more definit diagnosis than your "a/c unit was gone"! :D

I'd had this issue on a saab i had a while ago... , turns out a fan pully was juts a little off center and was knocking off its case'ing.... simple fixthat i could of messed up had i not realised how rare 9000's are , let alone the new/used price of a a/c unit ! best to just pay full price and get it sorted a.s.a.p

also are you sure the knocking is the a/c ??

Not sure if you air con unit is gone or not..but i did get a quote from a garage yesterday to get my own unit refilled.

It was €120 including vat and thats in a main dealer (Toyota Garage)

Like Kbannon said you can pick up the refill kits from €30's in halfords havent used them myself and dont know how hard they are to use

@ MR DAZ - the refill kits are easy enough to use but IIRC you need good gloves as the aerosol top gets mighty cold and you are holding it down for quite a while. I got the €30 can but I regretted it afterwards as I should have gone for the bigger can which costs about €60. This one has a pressure gauge which lets you know whether to stop or not.
