Apparently the Chinese authorities are applying pressure to governments to discourage the use of anti-pollution masks as they are worried about how that will look. A cyclist who competed in one of teh warm-up events said that he saw smog hanging in the air inside the velodrome. I doubt we'll see many records set at these Games.

Every polluted cloud has a silver lining though - it now means we will have a Geb vs Bekele to see who is the greatest over 10,000 after all. You'd have to fancy the youngster but it would be a great story if Geb managed to pull it out.

Shame alright could be his last chance for Olympic Gold in the Marathon - he says he has commited to 2012 but at 38 I wonder will he be just a bit too old to compete. He's always an inpiration to watch

I really don't think there is any contest between Bekele and Gebrselassie. It has to be Bekele. The younger fitter man. At the world championships a few years ago, they ran the 10,000 slower than otherwise to accommodate Gebrselassie, he kept up the pace for most of the race but was burned over the last two laps. I reall wish he would compete in the marathon.

He could still run the marathon if he doesn't 'qualify' for the Ethiopean team and has no choice. He ran sub 27 last year and was still only ranked 4th Ethiopean, unbelievable stuff. Would they deprive him a run in the 10,000 is the question though.

I think if he doesn't finish in top 3 ethiopeans in Hengelo he will run the marathon.
